Math Tuition Singapore: Structured Support With Dedicated Tutors

Math tuition in Singapore works when it is structured around the same syllabus a student actually sits, and taught by someone who stays with them long enough to know where they go wrong. That is the whole proposition at Odyssey Math Tuition: a curriculum aligned to the Ministry of Education syllabus, small classes, and the same tutor through the year.

We teach mathematics only, from Primary 1 through to JC2 — primary school math tuition, secondary school math tuition and junior college math tuition. It is a deliberate limitation rather than a gap: teaching one subject across every level is what lets a tutor recognise that a Secondary 3 problem usually began in Secondary 1.

Every enrolled student also gets access to our online math tuition courses, so the six days between lessons are covered too. A weekly class supplies the person who notices when a student quietly stops working; the online course supplies the explanation at nine on a Tuesday evening. Most families who get the most out of us are using both.

Key Takeaways

  • Our curriculum follows the MOE syllabus and is taught by tutors who stay with the same class through the year.
  • We teach mathematics only, Primary 1 to JC2, in small classes at our Eunos centre.
  • Enrolled students get 24/7 access to the online course for their level, with video lessons, a question bank and topical tests.
  • Gaps in upper-secondary mathematics usually trace back to earlier years, which is why diagnosis comes before teaching.

Unlock the Math-gic: Your Guide to Math Tuition Singapore at Odyssey Math Tuition

Mathematics in Singapore moves quickly, and most of the difficulty families describe is not about ability. It is about timing — a topic that did not land in one term becomes the assumed knowledge of the next. Our job is to catch that early and fix it properly. This is what math tuition looks like at each stage with us.

Primary math tuition: building the foundation that everything else stands on

Primary mathematics starts gently and steepens fast. In Primary 1 math tuition and Primary 2 math tuition the work is number sense — what quantities mean, not just how to write them. By Primary 3 and Primary 4 math tuition, word problems turn multi-step and the model method becomes the tool that carries a child through.

Primary 5 math tuition is where the attainment gap most often opens, because topics stop being self-contained and start relying on earlier fluency. Primary 6 math tuition is then largely consolidation and examination technique for the PSLE. Classes are small, so a child who has gone quiet is noticed in the same lesson rather than in a report at the end of term.

Secondary math tuition: where algebra becomes the language

Secondary 1 math tuition is the year algebra stops being a topic and becomes the notation everything else is written in. Secondary 2 math tuition adds quadratics, simultaneous equations and proportion — and, under Full Subject-Based Banding, it is also where subject placement for upper secondary takes shape.

Secondary 3 math tuition is the hardest jump in the system for most students, because those taking Additional Mathematics begin two mathematics subjects at once and neither waits for the other. Secondary 4 math tuition is an O-Level year: very little is genuinely new, and almost everything depends on whether the previous three years are fluent enough to use at speed under examination conditions.

Junior college math tuition: H2 Mathematics at pace

Junior College 1 math tuition covers functions, sequences, series and introductory calculus — the foundation the second year assumes rather than revisits. Junior College 2 math tuition adds integration techniques, differential equations and the statistics half of the syllabus.

Our H2 math tuition assumes the A-Math toolkit needs to be automatic, not merely passed, and spends time there when it is not. Students arriving through the Integrated Programme take a different route to the same examination, and we teach both.

What makes our math tuition in Singapore different

Our founder, Mr. Justin Tan, has taught mathematics since 2012 and wrote the OMT curriculum himself. He also records every lesson and every question-bank answer in our online math courses personally, so what a student hears at home is the same voice and the same method they get in class.

Three things follow from teaching one subject only. Classes stay small enough for a tutor to know each student’s specific weakness. The first lesson diagnoses rather than teaches. And when a Secondary 3 student is struggling, we can go back to the Secondary 1 material at its own level instead of patching over it.

We are at Hexacube, 160 Changi Road #01-02, about three minutes’ walk from Eunos MRT, and we teach students from across the east and beyond. Fees and class times are published on our schedules and fees page rather than quoted on request.

Two ways to study with us

Some families want a weekly class. Some want the online course alone — it suits a student who can tell when they do not understand something and will act on it. Many use both, which is how the courses are designed to work. Every online course carries a 7-day money-back guarantee, so you can look at the actual material before committing.

Choosing Math Tuition in Singapore: Where to Start

Choosing math tuition in Singapore is less about comparing centres than about naming the problem first. A student who is coping in class but stalls on homework mid-week needs something different from one who has quietly decided they are not a maths person. The first needs material available at the moment of difficulty; the second needs a teacher who notices.

Whatever you are weighing up, four questions separate a useful arrangement from an expensive one. Does the first lesson diagnose or simply start teaching? Will you be told specifically what is wrong, within a month? Does the tutor who starts the year finish it? And is there a plan for the six days between lessons?

Our answer to the last one is that every enrolled student gets the online math course for their level included — recorded lessons, a question bank, topical practice and topical tests, available at any hour with unlimited replays. The weekly class supplies the attention; the course supplies the availability.

If you would rather start online, the courses can be taken on their own from Secondary 1 to JC2, and each carries a 7-day money-back guarantee. If you would rather see a class first, we run a free trial lesson at our Eunos centre.

Message us on WhatsApp at +65 8512 6882 to book a trial, or look through the schedules and fees and the frequently asked questions first. We teach mathematics only, from Primary 1 to JC2, and we will tell you if we think your child does not need us yet.

Specialist Math Tutor (Mr Justin Tan)

With experience coaching mathematics since 2012, Mr Tan is confident in his ability to not only connect with his students but also to quickly understand what his students do not understand and addressing it immediately. Author of Odyssey Math Videos, Mr Tan has dedicated his time and effort to create quality math resources for students in Singapore. He has helped many students improve their math results

Mr Tan graduated from NUS in June 2018 with a distinction in Applied Mathematics (Primary Major), together with a Secondary Major in Economics. Pursuing math degree and the love for math has always been his passion. After finishing national service, he became a math tutor teaching multiple students. He has since been providing tips and tricks on how to study better for mathematics to all his students. His passion is to create a place for students to enjoy learning math and at the same time to encourage and bond with the students.

Mr Tan sincerely believes that with his passion as well as his sincerity to help students overcome their barriers in mathematics, he can help students do well in mathematics. Seeing his students overcoming challenges as well as doing well for math is something he has dedicated his time for. At the end of the day, when students do well and thank him at the end, that will be the best reward he will ever receive.

Is your child unable to grasp math concepts well?

More often than not, students generally start to not do well in math when they get bored and fall behind in their math lessons. Mr Tan recognizes this and instead of providing the usual math lessons, he will introduce quizzes and competitions to spice up the lessons and have students participate in games and be rewarded if they are able to solve math questions. Of course, the key thing that Mr Tan will do is to first connect with the students, understand the root of the issue as to why his students are struggling in math and aims to eradicate all their weaknesses. Mr Tan supports your child by encouraging them and providing them the support they need to strengthen their math concepts.

Do you want your child to be better in Math?

Mr Tan is able to connect with not only students who are good in math but also weaker students struggling in math. He is able to improvise and provide the necessary challenge for stronger students and at the same time adjust to the right difficulty for students still trying to be better in math. With his tips, simplified explanations and shortcuts to understand math better, students can gain an advantage in mathematics. One who simply explains from the book does not truly understand the concepts. So long as students follow his guidance, work hard and use the resources he has provided, doing well for math is not impossible.

Secondary 1 Math

The fundamentals of secondary mathematics are taught right here in secondary 1 math. Students will have to understand more about numbers and we would say that the main introduction will be the understanding and manipulation of algebraic expressions. At this level, Mr Tan will train them to be better in algebra as this serves as a stepping stone to the next level in mathematics.

Secondary 2 Math

In secondary 2 math, students should have better understanding of algebraic expressions. They will learn new topics like direct and inverse proportion, algebraic formulas and quadratic functions. As you can see, students start to make use of what they have learnt in secondary 1 math as more and more algebra will come along as they progress further in secondary math. At this level, Mr Tan’s emphasis is to focus on not just being better in algebra but also to relate the use of algebra to math formulas.

Elementary Math

In secondary 3 and 4 e math, it is the culmination of all the math concepts that students have learnt in lower secondary. New topics such as standard form, laws of indices, sketching of graphs, coordinate geometry, trigonometry and properties of circles will be introduced (just naming a few). Students are expected to know their lower secondary math content as they will be tested on them as well. At this level, the key is to not just ensure the students do well in new topics but also to reinforce the math concepts they have learnt throughout secondary math.

Additional Math

Based on students’ secondary 2 math exams results, schools will decide if they are able to take additional math in upper secondary, which dives into a whole new realm of mathematics. Mr Tan will summarize Additional Math as advance secondary mathematics with a lot of new formulas. Students are expected to know these formulas well, know when to apply and manipulate it to solve additional math questions. At this level for additional math, Mr Tan feels that students often struggle because they do not understand these formulas well enough to be able to apply them correctly. Fortunately, he is very generous in imparting knowledge to his students such as tips and tricks on how and when to apply the formulas and also simplify the concepts for them.

JC Math

Yes, JC Math, the so called most feared mathematics that students could possibly imagine. JC Math isn’t a walk in the park anymore. Once students embark on this journey in JC Math, they would realize that secondary math was after all not that hard. In JC Math, students are expected to be decent in mathematics. The ability to manipulate math expression must be at their finger tips. At this level, Mr Tan’s aim is to ensure students must understand the math theories as well as have ample practice particularly for tricky and challenging questions.

The cost of secondary math tuition in Singapore ranges from $180 to $400 for group tuition and $240 to $800 for 1 to 1 tuition per month assuming 2 hours per lesson and 4 lessons a month.

The cost of jc math tuition in Singapore ranges from $280 to $400 for group tuition and $400 to $960 for 1 to 1 tuition per month assuming 2 hours per lesson and 4 lessons a month.

If you want to excel in mathematics, practicing and reviewing through math problems is the key to doing well. Students can do ten year series problems and for those who feel that they ready can tackle past year school papers as these can be challenging.

School teachers find it difficult to provide individual attention to students because of large class size (30 to 40 students per class) As such, going to a math tuition allows the math tutor to provide individual attention to students (for small class size), catering to their needs. This way, students can learn better and catch up in their school work.
