Primary 4 Math: The Bridge Year

Primary 4 is the bridge year. It consolidates the arithmetic of lower primary and introduces the problem-solving structures that Primary 5 will build on. Gaps left here become visible the following year. Fraction work with unlike denominators is the single most common gap carried into Primary 5.

Primary 4 gets less attention than the years either side of it. It is not the year problems appear, and it is not the year examinations loom. That is exactly why it matters — it is the last unhurried window before the curriculum steepens.

That is exactly what makes it valuable. There is no examination pressure, the content is manageable, and there is genuine time to fix things properly rather than working around them. Nearly every expensive problem we see in Primary 6 could have been addressed cheaply in Primary 4, when nobody felt any urgency about it.

The trade-off is that acting in Primary 4 requires you to act on something that does not yet look like a problem, which is a harder decision than responding to a bad report.

What the year covers

Four-operation fluency with larger numbers, factors and multiples, fractions including addition and subtraction with different denominators, decimals, angles and basic geometry, and area and perimeter of composite figures.

More importantly, word problems begin to require the structured representation that Primary 5 will demand constantly.

Two things must come together this year

Because it is where two things must come together: the arithmetic fluency built in lower primary, and the problem-solving habits needed for upper primary. A child who arrives in Primary 5 fluent but unstructured will struggle with ratio and percentage. A child who arrives structured but not fluent will run out of time.

Watch which of the two is missing, because they look similar from the outside and need different work. A child who is fluent but unstructured will do well on straightforward questions and fall apart on multi-step ones. A child who is structured but not fluent will reason correctly and run out of time. Both produce disappointing marks; only one is fixed by more practice.

Three things worth watching

  • Fraction operations with unlike denominators. The most common Primary 4 gap, and one that becomes serious in Primary 5.
  • Whether working is written down. Mental solving works at this level and stops working next year. Build the writing habit now.
  • Comfort with being stuck. Primary 5 problems require persistence. A child who gives up quickly needs that addressed before the content gets harder.

A reasonable year to start, and a reasonable year to wait

It is a reasonable year to start if there is a specific gap — particularly in fractions. It is also a reasonable year to do nothing, if your child is fluent and structured.

What is harder to recommend is starting tuition in Primary 4 purely as insurance. Children who do not need it at this stage often find it tedious, and tedium at nine or ten years old has a long tail. Our FAQ sets out how we assess whether a gap is real.

The fraction check worth doing this year

If you do one thing in Primary 4, do this. Ask your child to add one-third and one-quarter, and to explain why the denominators must match before adding.

A child who can perform the procedure but cannot explain the reason has learned a rule without the concept behind it. That works for another year and then stops working, because Primary 5 ratio and percentage both assume the concept rather than the rule.

The explanation itself is not complicated — you cannot add thirds to quarters any more than you can add metres to minutes, so both have to be expressed in the same units first. A child who has that sentence in their head handles equivalent fractions, ratio and percentage as one idea rather than three.

It takes about five minutes to check and, if the concept is missing, perhaps two weeks to build. Left alone, it produces difficulty for the next three years.
