Primary 5 is where the attainment gap opens in Singapore mathematics. Ratio, percentage, speed and advanced fraction work are introduced together, and students who were comfortable through Primary 4 can fall behind quickly. Ratio, percentage and speed are the same underlying idea, which is why teaching them separately tends to fail.

If you ask experienced primary teachers where children most often start to struggle with mathematics, most will say Primary 5. It is not a coincidence, and it is not because the students changed. It is because the content does.
The reason this year in particular is not mysterious once you look at what arrives in it. Primary 5 is where mathematics stops rewarding accurate arithmetic and starts requiring proportional reasoning, and those are genuinely different cognitive tasks. A child can be excellent at the first and need explicit teaching for the second.
This matters for how you interpret a sudden dip. A Primary 5 student whose marks fall is usually not working less hard than they were in Primary 4. They are meeting the first content in their school life that cannot be handled by careful calculation alone.
Three demanding topics arrive together
Three demanding topics arrive close together — ratio, percentage, and speed — and all three require proportional reasoning, which is a genuine conceptual step up from the arithmetic of earlier years.
What makes the combination difficult is that ratio, percentage and speed are the same underlying idea in three different costumes. A student who genuinely understands proportion handles all three with the same reasoning. A student who has learned them as three separate procedures has three things to remember, three things to confuse under pressure, and no way to recover if one goes blank.
That is why we teach the idea rather than the three procedures, and it is the single highest-leverage decision available in the primary curriculum.
At the same time, fraction work becomes more demanding, and word problems begin combining topics. A student who could previously solve problems by recognising a familiar pattern now has to analyse structure. That is a different skill, and it is not evenly distributed.
The early warning signs are behavioural, not numerical
- Answers appear without working. Often a sign the student is pattern-matching rather than reasoning — it works until the patterns stop repeating.
- Word problems are skipped first. Avoidance is usually about comprehension, not laziness.
- Ratio and fraction questions attract the same errors repeatedly. That is a conceptual gap, not carelessness.
- Homework time has quietly doubled. The clearest early signal, and the easiest to miss.
A fortnightly check that beats a term of marks
Ask your child to explain a ratio question aloud — not to solve it, to explain what it is asking. A student who can restate the problem in their own words has the concept. A student who reaches immediately for a remembered procedure usually does not.
Doing this once a fortnight gives you something a report book cannot: an early read on whether your child is reasoning or reciting. Recitation holds up well through Primary 4 and starts failing in Primary 5, which is precisely why so many families experience this year as a sudden change rather than a gradual one.

Fractions come second, because Primary 6 problem-solving assumes fluency there and because it is the foundation that Secondary 1 algebra leans on hardest two years later.
Primary 5 is the most defensible year to start
It is the most defensible year to start, if you are going to. Gaps that open in Primary 5 and are left alone become Primary 6 problems at exactly the point when there is no time to fix them properly.
That said, the honest test is the same as always: can your child work through a Primary 5 paper at around seventy per cent unaided, and explain their errors afterwards? Is Primary 5 really harder than Primary 6?
In terms of new content, generally yes. Primary 5 introduces the demanding problem-solving topics; Primary 6 largely consolidates and extends them. Many families are surprised by this, having braced for Primary 6.
My child was fine until Primary 5. What changed?
Almost certainly the arrival of proportional reasoning. Earlier primary mathematics rewards accurate arithmetic and pattern recognition. Primary 5 requires analysing structure. Children who leaned on the former often need explicit teaching of the latter.
How much should a Primary 5 student practise?
Around thirty to forty-five focused minutes on a school day is plenty for most students, provided errors are reviewed. Beyond that, fatigue tends to produce the carelessness the extra work was meant to remove.

Usually a fluency or timing gap rather than comprehension. Understanding a method while it is in front of you is a different skill from retrieving it under time pressure. The remedy is timed practice with review, not re-teaching content the child already understands.
Should we focus on speed drills at Primary 5?
Accuracy first, by some margin. Speed built on shaky method produces confident wrong answers, which are harder to fix than slow correct ones. Once the method is secure, timed practice builds speed relatively quickly and without the same risk.
