How to Check an AI-Generated Maths Answer

Checking an AI answer does not require knowing the method. Verifying the arithmetic, testing consistency and comparing against the taught approach catches most problems.

Why checking is necessary

These systems produce fluent, confident, well-formatted solutions that are sometimes wrong. The presentation carries no information about correctness, which is precisely what makes them risky for a child working alone.

Errors also tend to be plausible rather than absurd, so they survive a casual glance.

Checks that work without knowing the method

Verify the arithmetic at each step. This requires no understanding of the approach and catches a good share of errors.

Substitute the answer back into the original question. If the numbers do not reconcile, something is wrong regardless of how convincing the working looked.

Ask the same question again in a fresh conversation. Different answers mean the tool is not reliable here.

Sanity-check the size. An answer implying a child cycled at 300 km/h is wrong whatever the working says.

A four-step check anyone can run:

  • Does the arithmetic hold at each step?
  • Does the answer work when substituted back?
  • Is the answer a sensible size?
  • Does the method match what school taught?

The check that matters most

Compare the method against the school workbook. An answer can be entirely correct and still useless if it uses a technique your child has not been taught — and worse than useless if they then reproduce it in an exam.

This is the check parents most often skip, and it is the one that distinguishes helpful use from harmful use at primary level.

Teaching a child to check

Have them predict the rough size of the answer before asking. It gives them something to test against and stops passive acceptance.

Ask them to explain the AI’s solution back to you. If they cannot, they have collected an answer rather than learned anything.
