Spaced Practice: Why Maths Revision Should Be Spread Out

The same total practice produces better retention when spread across days than when concentrated into one session. Spacing is one of the few study techniques with a large, reliable effect.

The effect is real and large

Practising a topic on four separate days produces markedly better retention than the same total time in one sitting. This is one of the more robust findings in how learning works.

It also feels worse at the time, which is why students avoid it. Massed practice produces fluency within the session and the illusion of mastery; spaced practice feels harder because some forgetting has occurred between sessions.

Why forgetting helps

Retrieving something you have partly forgotten strengthens the memory far more than reviewing something still fresh. The effort of recall is the mechanism.

That means the slight struggle at the start of a spaced session is not a sign the method is failing. It is a sign it is working.

Applying it to maths

Return to a repaired topic a few weeks later rather than assuming it is fixed. Topics fixed once and never revisited routinely reappear in exam errors.

Keep short cumulative sets that include older material rather than only the current chapter.

For facts that must be automatic — tables, conversions, formulae — brief daily exposure beats a long weekly session by a wide margin.

A spaced structure that works:

  • Short daily work on facts that need to be automatic
  • Current topic practised across several days, not one
  • Older repaired topics revisited every few weeks
  • Cumulative sets that mix old and new material
  • Full papers occasionally, not weekly

Fitting it into a real week

Spacing does not require more time, only different scheduling. Fifteen minutes on four days is the same investment as an hour on one and produces more.

It also fits family life better, which matters, because the plan that gets followed beats the plan that is theoretically optimal.

When the same curriculum carries a child from Primary 1 to Primary 6, nobody has to reconstruct where an earlier gap was left, and no year is taught as though the previous one did not happen. It also means a child moving up does not have to adjust to a different way of explaining the same ideas.
