Beyond a modest amount, additional tuition hours produce diminishing returns. What the time is spent on matters far more than how much of it there is.
More is not reliably better
Additional hours help when they are spent on something identified. They help very little when spent covering material a student already knows, which is what unfocused extra time usually becomes.
There is also a ceiling. A student already at capacity across several subjects will get less from a fourth hour than from better use of the first.
What actually determines the return
Whether the difficulty has been diagnosed. Undiagnosed, extra hours are a search rather than a treatment.
Whether the student works between sessions. An hour a week with practice in between beats three hours with none.
Class size, since attention rather than time is the scarce resource.
Before adding hours, check:
- Has the actual difficulty been identified?
- Is the student practising between sessions?
- What specifically would the extra hour cover?
- Is there capacity across the whole week?
- Would better-directed time achieve the same thing?
Signs of too much
Homework not done because tuition homework has displaced it.
Fatigue showing as carelessness rather than as complaint.
Resentment of the subject, which costs more over years than the extra hours gain in months.
Judging it honestly
Ask what the additional hour would be spent on specifically. If the answer is vague, the hour will be too.
For most students, one well-directed session a week with real practice in between is more productive than two unfocused ones.
There is also a compounding cost that rarely gets counted. Every hour committed to tuition is an hour not spent on sleep, on another subject, or on doing nothing in particular — and for a secondary student the third of those is not waste. Students who are scheduled solidly across seven days tend to arrive at the exam period with nothing held in reserve, which is when it matters most.
