Why H2 revision has a two-year problem
Most A-Level candidates revise JC2 content thoroughly and JC1 content barely at all, because JC2 is recent and JC1 feels finished. The paper does not share that view. Functions, sequences, vectors and introductory calculus are examined alongside the statistics and advanced calculus of the second year.
The other structural difficulty is volume. H2 covers a great deal of ground, and a revision plan that tries to give equal time to everything runs out of time before it runs out of syllabus. Prioritising by weakness rather than by chapter order is the only workable approach.
Phase one: find out what is actually weak
Revision fails most often because it is spread evenly over material that is not evenly secure. The first week should produce a list, not coverage.
- Take a topical test cold on each major topic, with no revision beforehand.
- Record the mark and, more usefully, the type of error.
- Sort every topic into secure, shaky or absent.
- Set the secure pile aside completely for the next month.
Most students find four or five genuinely weak topics rather than twenty, which is what makes the rest of the plan possible.
Phase two: repair, one topic at a time
Repair one topic at a time and alternate between the two years deliberately. A week of JC2 statistics followed by a week of JC1 functions keeps both alive.
Respect dependencies. Integration techniques assume differentiation is automatic; hypothesis testing assumes the normal distribution is secure; complex number loci assume confident Argand work. Repairing the later topic while the earlier one is weak does not hold.
Statistics and calculus fail differently. Calculus errors are usually technique; statistics errors are usually interpretation and wording. Diagnose which kind you are making before deciding how to fix it.
Phase three: whole papers under real conditions
Full-paper practice only pays once the weak topics are repaired. Before that it mostly measures the same gaps over and over.
- Sit the paper at the real time limit, in one sitting, without notes
- Mark it honestly, awarding method marks as an examiner would
- Categorise every lost mark as knowledge, method or execution
- Repair knowledge losses; drill execution losses under time

The two error types that need opposite treatment
Marks lost because a method was unavailable and marks lost because a known method was executed badly look identical on the script and need entirely different responses.
- Knowledge losses — return to the topic explanation and practice.
- Execution losses — sign errors, misread questions, premature rounding, missing units. Drill under time; re-learning the topic will not help.
Most students in the final months have far more execution losses than knowledge losses and revise as though the reverse were true. That single misallocation costs more marks than any individual topic.
The last fortnight
Stop learning new material and shift entirely to timed papers and error review. H2 papers are long, and pacing is a skill that only develops under real time pressure.
Rehearse the written elements specifically: stating distributions, stating assumptions, writing conclusions in context, and giving arguments in the required range. These carry marks and are lost through habit rather than ignorance.
Re-read your own error log rather than the textbook. By this stage the highest-value revision is the record of what you personally get wrong.
