Support that does not account for that produces JC students who attend diligently, understand everything in the room, and continue to underperform in papers.
What JC support should actually address
Abstraction, not arithmetic. H2 questions ask about general behaviour. A tutor who works only through numerical examples is teaching the wrong thing.
Question interpretation. A substantial share of lost marks at H2 comes from misreading what a question requires, not from being unable to do it.
Time allocation. H2 papers are long. Students who spend disproportionate time on early questions lose accessible marks later.
Statistics specifically. Frequently the weakest strand, because it is least like anything students met before JC.
Four questions worth asking a prospective tutor

JC students have less time, not more
Less than a secondary student, which is counter-intuitive but true. The overall workload of the A-Level programme — three or four H2 subjects, Project Work, General Paper — leaves little slack.

This is why we would rather a JC student did ninety focused minutes aimed at an identified weakness than three unfocused hours of general revision. The second option feels more responsible and usually costs a grade somewhere else.
This has a practical implication: JC mathematics support has to be efficient rather than extensive. Long weekly sessions that displace other subjects can cost more than they return. Targeted work on identified weaknesses is the sensible shape.

The final months are almost entirely technique
By JC2 Term 3, the useful work is almost entirely technique: timed papers, error classification, and targeted repair of identified weaknesses. New content at that stage is rarely the constraint.

Statistics is unlike everything before it
Because it is genuinely unlike everything before it. A student arriving in JC1 has spent ten years on mathematics where answers are exact and methods are deterministic. Statistics asks them to reason about uncertainty, and to interpret rather than compute.
The practical consequence is that statistics rewards a different study method. Working more practice questions helps less than it does in pure mathematics; what helps is understanding what each test is actually asking about the population, which is a conceptual rather than procedural gain.
Students who treat hypothesis testing as a recipe to follow reliably lose marks on the interpretation, which is where a large share of the marks sit.
Students repeating or returning to H2
A smaller group, but worth addressing. Private candidates and students retaking often have most of the content and lack the examination conditioning — they know the material and have lost the timing.
For that profile, the useful work is almost entirely timed papers with rigorous review, rather than reteaching. It is a different programme from a first-time JC1 student and should be treated as one.
