A student who can do a topic with unlimited time and fails it under examination conditions does not have a knowledge gap — they have a fluency gap, and the two need different treatment. Two students, same mark, different problems
Two students each score six out of ten on a topic. One knew four of the methods and guessed the rest. The other knew all ten and ran out of time on four.
These require opposite responses. The first needs to learn methods; the second needs to speed up existing ones. A revision plan that treats both as “weak on this topic” will help one and waste the other’s month.
Why untimed practice feels better and teaches less
Untimed work is more comfortable and produces higher scores, which is exactly why students prefer it. It also removes the constraint the examination actually imposes.
Speed in mathematics is not about rushing. It is about how much of the method is automatic rather than reconstructed. A student rebuilding the quadratic formula from first principles each time will run out of time regardless of understanding, and no amount of untimed practice reveals that.
How to introduce time without panic
- First pass: untimed, to establish the method is present at all.
- Second pass: generous time, perhaps double the real allowance.
- Third pass: real time.
- If the third pass fails, the gap is fluency, and the fix is short repeated drills rather than re-learning.
Going straight to real time on a topic that is not yet understood produces discouragement without information, which is why the staging matters.
What to drill for fluency
- The mechanical steps: factorising, expanding, differentiating standard forms
- Recognition: which identity, which technique, which test applies
- Setup: turning a worded question into an equation quickly
- The final lines: stating units, giving the requested form, checking what was asked
Recognition is the one students neglect and the one that costs most under time. It is built by mixed practice, never by working through a chapter one type at a time.
