Sec 4 Math: The Final-Year Revision Plan

The Secondary 4 year is about consolidation and technique rather than new content. The largest available gains usually come from mixed-topic practice, timed conditions and disciplined error review, not from additional teaching. Technique gains in the final year are frequently larger than any remaining content gains.

By Secondary 4 most of the mathematics has been taught. What remains is making it reliable under examination conditions — a different project from learning it, and one that responds to different methods.

That single fact should reshape how the year is spent, and it usually does not. Most Secondary 4 revision looks like Secondary 3 teaching at higher speed, which is comfortable and largely redundant for a student who already understands the content.

The work that actually moves an O-Level grade at this stage is behavioural: recognising which method a question wants, allocating time across a paper, showing reasoning, and reviewing errors precisely enough to stop repeating them. None of that is taught by covering the syllabus again.

Sequencing the year

  • Term 1 — complete remaining syllabus, close identified gaps from Secondary 3
  • Term 2 — topic consolidation, then mixed-topic sets
  • Term 3 — full papers under timed conditions, prelims, thorough review
  • Final weeks — targeted work on identified weaknesses, reduced volume, protected sleep

The mixed-topic stage in Term 2 is the one most often skipped, and it is the one that most reliably lifts performance on the longer structured questions.

Because the examination does not label its questions. A substantial part of the difficulty is recognising which method applies, and topic-by-topic revision never tests that — the topic is given away by the worksheet heading.

This is worth dwelling on because it is the most common blind spot we see in otherwise well-prepared students. Topic revision hands the student the answer to the hardest part of the question — which topic it belongs to — before they read it. The examination does not. A student can therefore know every topic and still lose marks to recognition, and no amount of further topic revision reveals the problem.

Students often score lower on their first mixed sets. That drop measures a real skill gap that topical revision was concealing.

Prelims are diagnosis, not prophecy

As diagnosis, not prophecy. Prelims are frequently set harder than the national examination, and a disappointing prelim with eight weeks remaining is useful information rather than a verdict.

The productive response is to classify every lost mark: content not known, method not chosen, execution error, or time not managed. Those four have different remedies, and the mix tells you where the remaining weeks should go.

Three principles for the final eight weeks

Three principles that consistently hold:

Volume down, quality up. Two papers reviewed properly beat six papers filed away.

Work the weaknesses, not the comfort zone. Students naturally revise what they enjoy. The marks are in what they avoid.

Protect sleep and routine. Fatigue produces exactly the execution errors that late-stage revision is meant to eliminate.

Afterwards, if junior college is the plan, H2 Mathematics assumes A-Math content — the junior college pages set out what changes.

Balancing two mathematics subjects

Not equally, for most students taking both. A-Math generally needs more time than E-Math, because its topics build more tightly on one another and its fluency demands are higher.

There is also a sequencing argument. Work on A-Math algebra tends to lift E-Math performance as a side effect, because the same manipulation appears in both. The reverse is much less true. Where time is genuinely scarce, weighting towards A-Math often improves both results.

The exception is a student who is comfortable in A-Math and losing marks in E-Math to multi-topic questions. That is a technique problem in a specific subject, and it needs its own attention rather than more algebra.

A realistic weekly schedule

For a Secondary 4 student in Term 2, something like: one timed paper section per subject each week, one full review session of the previous week’s errors, and one block of targeted practice on whatever that review surfaced.

That is roughly four to five focused hours across both subjects — considerably less than many families assume, and more effective than longer unstructured sessions, because every hour is aimed at something identified rather than at coverage in general.
