Primary 3 covers the concepts of area and perimeter, measuring area in square units including cm² and m², the perimeter of rectilinear figures, rectangles and squares, and the area of rectangles and squares.
What area and perimeter actually asks of a Primary 3 student
Two measurements of the same shape, easily confused, and the confusion lasts for years. Perimeter is the distance round the edge; area is the space inside. They use different units and answer different questions.
The syllabus is careful to introduce area as counting square units before any formula appears. That order matters — a child who meets length × breadth first tends to apply it to shapes where it does not hold.
What the syllabus covers
Under the MOE primary mathematics syllabus, area and perimeter at Primary 3 covers:
- concepts of area and perimeter of a plane figure
- measuring area in square units, cm² and m², excluding conversion between them
- perimeter of rectilinear figures, rectangles and squares
- area of rectangle and square
Where the marks actually go
Swapping the two. Asked for perimeter, the child multiplies; asked for area, they add the sides. This is the defining error of the topic.
Units are wrong or missing. Area is in square units and perimeter in ordinary ones, and writing cm where cm² was needed loses the mark.
Rectilinear figures with missing side lengths defeat children who have not worked out that opposite sides of the whole figure must total the same.
How to practise this properly
Ask which one the question wants before doing anything, and have your child say why. “The fence goes round, so that is perimeter” is the reasoning that prevents the swap.
Count squares for area before using the formula, at least at first. It makes the square units meaningful rather than a piece of notation to remember.
For rectilinear figures, mark every known length on the diagram and work out the missing ones before starting. Most errors here are bookkeeping.
What this leads to
Primary 5 brings the area of a triangle and composite figures; Primary 6 adds circles. All of them assume the distinction between area and perimeter is completely secure.

Frequently asked questions
How do I explain the difference between area and perimeter?
Perimeter is walking round the edge; area is painting the inside. Tying each to a physical action makes the distinction stick better than definitions do.
Why does area use square units?
Because area is counted in squares. Two centimetres by three centimetres is six squares, each one centimetre by one centimetre — hence cm².
Does Primary 3 convert between cm² and m²?
No. The syllabus explicitly excludes that conversion at this level.
What is a rectilinear figure?
A shape made of straight lines meeting at right angles — an L-shape, for example. Perimeter questions on these often leave some sides unmarked.
