“I Understand It, But I Cannot Solve It”

Understanding an explanation and generating a solution are different skills. The gap is normal, and it closes through attempting problems unaided rather than through further explanation.

Why this is so common

Following a worked example is a recognition task. Solving a fresh problem is a generation task. The second is considerably harder, and time spent on the first does not build it.

Students are not being dishonest when they say they understood. They did — that is exactly the problem.

The wrong response

Explaining again. If the explanation was understood the first time, a second one adds nothing and confirms to the student that they are incapable.

More worked examples, for the same reason. They build recognition, which is already present.

What actually closes the gap

Attempting problems unaided, including failing at them. The struggle is not a side effect of learning here; it is the mechanism.

Starting with problems just beyond what has been mastered, rather than at full difficulty. The aim is genuine effort with a realistic chance of success.

Waiting a day after an explanation before attempting. Immediately afterwards, the student is recalling rather than generating.

A sequence that closes the gap:

  • Explanation, once
  • One guided example with the student holding the pencil
  • A day’s gap
  • Unaided attempt at a similar problem
  • Only then, if needed, a further explanation aimed at the specific sticking point

What to say to a discouraged student

That this gap is normal and expected, not evidence of being bad at the subject. Most students believe the reverse, and the belief does real damage.

And that the discomfort of attempting something unaided is what the learning feels like from the inside — which is worth saying explicitly, because it does not feel like progress at the time.

Mathematics at primary level does not reset each year, so neither does our teaching. The same MOE-aligned curriculum runs from Primary 1 to Primary 6, which means we can tell the difference between a child who has not met an idea and one who met it and never secured it. Those two situations look identical on a worksheet and need completely different responses.

Long enough to engage genuinely, not long enough to become distressed. A few minutes of real effort is the useful window.

Is this gap a sign of a learning difficulty?

Rarely. It is the normal shape of learning mathematics, and it closes with the right kind of practice.
