Long Multiplication and Division: A Primary 4 Guide

Primary 4 covers the multiplication algorithm up to 4 digits by 1 digit and up to 3 digits by 2 digits, and the division algorithm up to 4 digits by 1 digit.

What the four operations actually asks of a Primary 4 student

Two-digit multiplication is the hardest procedural skill in primary mathematics. It requires two rounds of multiplying, a placeholder zero in the second row, and then an addition — several things to hold at once.

Long division is close behind, because it cycles through divide, multiply, subtract, bring down, and a child who forgets which step comes next produces nonsense rather than a near miss.

Both are pure execution. The mathematics is understood; the marks depend on carrying it out without slipping.

What the syllabus covers

Under the MOE primary mathematics syllabus, the four operations at Primary 4 covers:

  • multiplication algorithm up to 4 digits by 1 digit and up to 3 digits by 2 digits
  • division algorithm up to 4 digits by 1 digit

Where the marks actually go

The missing placeholder zero in the second row of a two-digit multiplication. The answer ends up roughly a tenth of what it should be.

In long division, forgetting to bring the next digit down, or omitting a zero in the quotient when the divisor does not go into a digit.

Column misalignment, which at four digits changes the answer by thousands and is invisible in messy work.

How to practise this properly

Insist on squared paper or ruled columns. Most long-multiplication errors are alignment errors wearing a disguise.

Say the steps of long division aloud in order while working. The rhythm is what keeps the cycle intact.

Estimate first. If 312 × 24 is roughly 300 × 25, an answer near 7 500 is plausible and one near 750 is not.

Check division by multiplying back. It takes seconds and catches almost everything.

What this leads to

Primary 5 uses these algorithms inside multi-step word problems, where the arithmetic is a step rather than the task. Fluency here is what leaves attention available for the reasoning.

Our MOE-aligned curriculum runs from Primary 1 to Primary 6, so when something goes wrong we can trace it to the year it actually formed and repair it there, instead of drilling the level where it happens to be showing up. That distinction usually decides whether extra work produces improvement or simply produces more work.

Because it looks like it does nothing. Explaining that the second row is multiplying by tens, not units, gives the zero a reason and makes it memorable.
