Fractions as Division: A Primary 5 Guide

Primary 5 covers the relationship between fractions and division — that 3/4 means 3 divided by 4.

What fraction and division actually asks of a Primary 5 student

This looks like a small point and is one of the more important ideas in primary mathematics. A fraction is not only part of a whole; it is also a division waiting to be carried out.

That reading explains why 3/4 equals 0.75, why improper fractions convert to mixed numbers by dividing, and why fractions and decimals are two notations for the same thing.

Children who hold both readings can move fluently between fractions and decimals. Children who hold only the first have to memorise conversions instead.

What the syllabus covers

Under the MOE primary mathematics syllabus, fraction and division at Primary 5 covers:

  • the relationship between fraction and division

Where the marks actually go

Dividing the wrong way round, so 3/4 is calculated as 4 divided by 3.

Failing to connect the two forms, so a child converts by recalling a fact rather than by dividing.

Word problems about sharing that are solved by trial rather than by writing the division as a fraction.

How to practise this properly

Read every fraction as “numerator divided by denominator” for a while. The habit makes the direction automatic.

Convert fractions to decimals by actually dividing rather than recalling. It reinforces the idea and works for fractions the child has not memorised.

Use sharing problems: three pizzas between four people gives each 3/4. The fraction is the answer to the division.

Check conversions by multiplying back — 0.75 × 4 should return 3.

Use the division reading to explain results the child already knows. Asking why 1/2 is 0.5, and answering “because one divided by two is nought point five”, converts a memorised conversion into something derivable. That matters because it generalises to fractions nobody has memorised.

What this leads to

Primary 6 divides by fractions, and the whole of secondary algebra treats fraction notation as division. This is the idea that makes that possible.

Mathematics at primary level does not reset each year, so neither does our teaching. The same MOE-aligned curriculum runs from Primary 1 to Primary 6, which means we can tell the difference between a child who has not met an idea and one who met it and never secured it. Those two situations look identical on a worksheet and need completely different responses.

What lessons at Odyssey are actually like

A student describes the experience in her own words. She is in secondary school, and the teaching she describes is what we do at primary level too. More are on Odyssey Math TV.

Getting help with this topic

We teach Primary 5 maths in small classes at Hexacube, 160 Changi Road #01-02, about three minutes from Eunos MRT. You can see our class schedules and fees, read about our math tutors, or look through the primary school math tuition programme as a whole. If your child is in a nearby school, our primary school directory may be useful too.

The trial lesson is free and diagnostic. You will leave knowing what we think the cause of the difficulty is and what we would do about it, whether or not you go on to enrol. That seems a fairer basis for a decision than a brochure. Arrange one or WhatsApp +65 8512 6882.

What we describe here comes from teaching this syllabus in our own classes since 2012. It is not a forecast for any individual child: progress is produced jointly, by a student willing to do the work with support at home. We do not promise grades. Topics follow the MOE primary mathematics syllabus — check the current syllabus on the MOE website for the definitive version, and see our curriculum page for how we teach it.

Frequently asked questions

Which number is divided by which?

The numerator by the denominator. 3/4 means 3 divided by 4.

Why does this matter?

It links fractions and decimals into one system rather than two, and it explains every conversion rather than requiring them to be memorised.

Does this help with word problems?

Considerably. Sharing problems become a single division written as a fraction, rather than something to be reasoned out from scratch.

How does it connect to later work?

Algebraic fractions at secondary level are divisions written in the same notation. Students secure here find that transition much easier.
