What the four operations actually asks of a Primary 5 student
Until now, calculations were done left to right because that was the only order available. Now the operations themselves decide the order, and getting it wrong produces a completely different answer.
Multiplication and division come before addition and subtraction, and brackets override everything. That is the whole rule, and applying it consistently is the whole skill.
This is genuinely a rules topic rather than a conceptual one, and it rewards deliberate practice more than explanation.
What the syllabus covers
Under the MOE primary mathematics syllabus, the four operations at Primary 5 covers:
- order of operations without calculator
- use of brackets
Where the marks actually go
Working strictly left to right, so 3 + 4 × 2 becomes 14 instead of 11.
Brackets ignored or evaluated after the multiplication.
Long expressions where one step is done correctly and the next reverts to left-to-right, usually because the working was not written out.
How to practise this properly
Write each step on a new line rather than doing several at once. Most errors happen in the steps that were never written down.
Underline the part to be done first before starting. Making the decision explicit stops the automatic left-to-right habit.
Practise pairs of expressions that differ only in bracket placement, so the child sees that brackets change the answer rather than decorate it.
Check by recalculating in a different order where possible — if the answers differ, the rule was applied inconsistently somewhere.
Give your child expressions where the left-to-right answer and the correct answer are both whole numbers and both look reasonable. If the wrong method produces an obviously silly result, the child never has to think; if it produces a plausible one, they have to apply the rule deliberately, which is the point.
What this leads to
Order of operations governs every algebraic expression from Primary 6 onwards. A student who is shaky here will misread algebra for years.
Almost every primary topic is scaffolding for a later one, and the scaffolding is invisible until it gives way. That is why our curriculum is written across all six years, Primary 1 to Primary 6, rather than level by level — it lets us see the whole structure a child is standing on, not just the step they are currently on.
