Primary 5 extends whole numbers to 10 million, covering notation, representations and place values at that scale.
What numbers up to 10 million actually asks of a Primary 5 student
The structure is unchanged and the scale is not. Millions arrive, and with them numbers long enough that a child must group digits to read them at all.
Reading is the skill. 3 040 500 is read in groups of three from the right, and a child who reads digit by digit will neither say it nor write it correctly.
Nothing conceptually new appears here, which is precisely why a place-value weakness from earlier years becomes obvious now — there is nowhere left for it to hide.

Where the marks actually go
Miscounting zeros when writing a number from words. Three million forty thousand is 3 040 000, and one zero out changes the answer by a factor of ten.
Grouping digits incorrectly, which makes the number unreadable and the answer wrong.
Comparing large numbers by length without checking that both have the same number of digits.
How to practise this properly
Group in threes from the right, always. The spaces are not decoration — they are what makes the number readable.
Convert between words and numerals in both directions, since the errors differ.
Read large numbers aloud. The spoken form carries the place value, so a child who says it correctly usually writes it correctly.
Use real large numbers — populations, distances, prices — so the scale means something rather than being an abstraction.
Practise numbers that contain internal zeros at this scale — 5 002 040, for instance. They are the ones that expose whether a child is genuinely tracking place value or reading the digits as a string, and they appear in questions precisely because they are discriminating.
What this leads to
Every later calculation at Primary 5 and 6 uses numbers of this size inside word problems, where misreading one is fatal to an otherwise correct method.
Because each year assumes the last, we teach the primary levels as one continuous sequence. Our MOE-aligned curriculum covers Primary 1 through Primary 6, so repair happens at the source rather than at the surface. In practice that often means spending a lesson on something from two years ago in order to fix what is failing today.
