Adding and Subtracting Fractions: A Primary 4 Guide

Primary 4 extends adding and subtracting fractions to denominators not exceeding 12, with more than two related fractions no longer the limit.

What adding and subtracting fractions actually asks of a Primary 4 student

The training wheels come off. Denominators no longer have to be related, so a child must find a common denominator rather than convert one fraction to match the other.

Answers can now exceed one whole, which means converting an improper result to a mixed number is often the final step — and forgetting it is a common way to lose the last mark.

What the syllabus covers

Under the MOE primary mathematics syllabus, adding and subtracting fractions at Primary 4 covers:

Where the marks actually go

Adding numerators and denominators straight across. The Primary 2 habit resurfaces whenever a child is rushed.

Finding a common denominator but converting only one of the fractions.

Leaving an improper fraction where a mixed number was expected, or failing to simplify.

How to practise this properly

Write the common denominator first, before anything else. Making it a separate written step prevents the shortcut that causes most errors.

Use the product of the denominators when the lowest common one is not obvious. It gives larger numbers but always works, and simplifying at the end fixes the size.

Finish every answer properly: simplify, and convert to a mixed number if improper. Build it into the routine rather than treating it as optional.

Estimate first. Two fractions each near a half should total near one, and an answer of 2/9 is then visibly wrong.

What this leads to

Primary 5 multiplies and divides fractions and Primary 6 divides by fractions. Each assumes addition and subtraction are secure enough not to occupy attention.

A weakness at this stage rarely announces itself. It surfaces a year or two later wearing a different name, which is why parents so often report that the trouble “started” in a year where it merely became visible. Teaching Primary 1 through Primary 6 on one curriculum is what makes tracing it back to the real starting point practical rather than speculative.

How do you find a common denominator?

Find a common multiple of the two denominators. The lowest one keeps the numbers smallest, but any common multiple works if you simplify at the end.

Should improper answers be converted?

Usually yes, unless the question says otherwise. Converting and simplifying are both part of a complete answer.

My child adds denominators. Why does this keep coming back?

It is the intuitive move, and it resurfaces under time pressure. Writing the common denominator as a separate step before calculating is the reliable prevention.
