What money actually asks of a Primary 3 student

This is arithmetic with a decimal point, a year before decimals are formally taught. Children manage it because money is familiar, but the underlying place value is doing real work.

Most difficulty is presentational rather than mathematical: keeping the decimal points aligned so that cents are added to cents and dollars to dollars.

What the syllabus covers

Under the MOE primary mathematics syllabus, money at Primary 3 covers:

  • adding and subtracting money in decimal notation

Where the marks actually go

Misaligned decimal points, so $12.50 and $3.05 are added as if the digits simply line up on the right. The answer is then out by a factor of ten or more.

Renaming across the decimal point — borrowing from the dollars into the cents — is skipped or done wrongly.

The dollar sign or the second decimal place is dropped from the final answer, which is marked even when the arithmetic is correct.

How to practise this properly

Write the decimal points in a vertical line before writing any digits. Alignment first, arithmetic second.

Fill empty places with zeros so every amount has two decimal places. $4 becomes $4.00, and the column structure becomes obvious.

Check the answer against a rough estimate in whole dollars. It catches the factor-of-ten errors that alignment problems produce.

Practise subtraction where the cents require borrowing from the dollars — $10.05 minus $3.60, for instance. That single pattern accounts for a large share of the marks lost in this topic, and it is worth drilling on its own rather than mixed in with easier questions.

Give your child change-giving problems from real purchases. Working out what comes back from a note is subtraction in decimal notation with a built-in sanity check, because an implausible amount of change is obvious in a way that an implausible answer on a worksheet is not.

What this leads to

Primary 4 introduces decimals as a topic, and Primary 5 uses them in all four operations and in percentage, discount and GST. The alignment discipline learned here is exactly what those need.

Mathematics at primary level does not reset each year, so neither does our teaching. The same MOE-aligned curriculum runs from Primary 1 to Primary 6, which means we can tell the difference between a child who has not met an idea and one who met it and never secured it. Those two situations look identical on a worksheet and need completely different responses.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my child misalign the decimal point?

Because in whole-number arithmetic you align on the right-hand digit, and that habit transfers. Writing the points first makes the correct alignment automatic.

Should amounts always have two decimal places?

In money, yes. Writing $4.00 rather than $4 keeps the columns correct and matches the convention that is marked.

Is a calculator allowed?

Not for this topic at Primary 3. The written method is what is being assessed.

How does this connect to decimals later?

It is the same place-value system. Children who are secure with money usually find Primary 4 decimals straightforward.
