What adding and subtracting fractions actually asks of a Primary 2 student

Only like fractions are added at this level, which makes the arithmetic simple and the concept the whole point. Two eighths plus three eighths is five eighths because the size of the piece has not changed — only how many you have.

That is exactly why the denominator stays put. A child who understands the pieces will never add denominators; a child who has memorised a rule will do it the moment they are tired.

What the syllabus covers

Under the MOE primary mathematics syllabus, adding and subtracting fractions at Primary 2 covers:

  • adding and subtracting like fractions within one whole, with denominators of given fractions not exceeding 12

Where the marks actually go

Adding the denominators — 2/8 + 3/8 = 5/16 — is the classic error and it is a sign the concept has not landed, not that the child was careless.

Answers are left unsimplified where the question expects a simplest form, or simplified when the question did not ask.

Subtraction questions where the answer is zero or a whole confuse children who have only met fractions as parts of something.

How to practise this properly

Say every calculation in words: “two eighths plus three eighths”. Nobody who says it aloud adds the denominators, because the sentence makes the answer obvious.

Use a strip divided into equal parts and physically combine them. The denominator visibly does not change, which is the whole lesson.

Include a few questions that total exactly one whole, so the child meets 8/8 and has to decide what it means.

What this leads to

Primary 3 moves to related fractions with different denominators, where one denominator is a multiple of the other. That step is only manageable if this one is understood rather than memorised.

A weakness at this stage rarely announces itself. It surfaces a year or two later wearing a different name, which is why parents so often report that the trouble “started” in a year where it merely became visible. Teaching Primary 1 through Primary 6 on one curriculum is what makes tracing it back to the real starting point practical rather than speculative.

Frequently asked questions

Why must the denominators be the same to add?

Because the denominator says what size the pieces are. You can only count pieces together if they are the same size — adding halves to quarters means nothing until one is rewritten.

Should answers be given in simplest form?

Follow what the question asks. Simplest form is formally introduced at Primary 3, so at Primary 2 the instruction will usually be explicit.

Are answers greater than one whole included?

Not at Primary 2 — the syllabus keeps addition and subtraction within one whole. Improper fractions and mixed numbers come at Primary 4.

My child adds the denominators. How do I fix it?

Stop using symbols for a few sessions and use a fraction strip instead. The error does not survive contact with a physical model.
