What adding and subtracting related fractions actually asks of a Primary 3 student

Related fractions are the bridge between Primary 2, where denominators matched, and Primary 4 and 5, where they can be anything. Here one denominator is a multiple of the other, so only one fraction needs rewriting.

That restriction is generous and worth using. A child who learns to spot which fraction to convert — always the one with the smaller denominator — has a reliable method before the general case arrives.

What the syllabus covers

Under the MOE primary mathematics syllabus, adding and subtracting related fractions at Primary 3 covers:

  • adding and subtracting two related fractions within one whole, with denominators of given fractions not exceeding 12

Where the marks actually go

Adding without converting at all, so 1/2 + 1/4 becomes 2/6. The Primary 2 habit of adding straight across survives if it was never properly displaced.

Converting the wrong fraction, or converting both unnecessarily, which makes the arithmetic harder and invites slips.

Forgetting to simplify the final answer where the question requires it.

How to practise this properly

Make identifying the common denominator an explicit first step, written down before any arithmetic. Skipping straight to calculating is where the errors start.

Ask which denominator divides into the other. Answering that question tells the child exactly what to convert, every time.

Use fraction strips for a few sessions if the Primary 2 habit is still present. Seeing that halves and quarters are different sizes settles it faster than correction does.

What this leads to

Primary 4 extends to unlike fractions and mixed numbers, and Primary 5 to all four operations with fractions. The method learned here generalises directly.

Almost every primary topic is scaffolding for a later one, and the scaffolding is invisible until it gives way.
