What fractions actually asks of a Primary 2 student
Fractions are the first numbers a child meets that are not counting numbers, and the first where bigger-looking can mean smaller. That one-eighth is less than one-quarter contradicts everything learned about numbers so far.
The syllabus is careful here: only unit fractions (one part) and like fractions (same denominator) are compared at this level. Unlike fractions come at Primary 3, once the idea is secure.
What the syllabus covers
Under the MOE primary mathematics syllabus, fractions at Primary 2 covers:
- fraction as part of a whole
- notation and representations of fractions
- comparing and ordering fractions with denominators not exceeding 12, covering unit fractions and like fractions
Where the marks actually go
Believing that a larger denominator means a larger fraction is the defining error of this topic, and it is entirely reasonable from the child’s point of view.
Shading questions are answered by counting parts shaded without checking that the parts are equal. A fraction requires equal parts, and questions test that deliberately.
Notation gets reversed — numerator and denominator swapped — particularly when a child is working quickly.
How to practise this properly
Use one physical whole and cut it different ways. Seeing that eighths are visibly smaller than quarters does more than any explanation, because it addresses the intuition directly.
Always ask whether the parts are equal before naming a fraction. Making that the first question builds a check that catches most shading errors.
Say fractions aloud as “one out of four equal parts” rather than “one over four” while the idea is forming. The words carry the meaning that the symbol hides.
What this leads to
Primary 3 introduces equivalent fractions, simplest form and unlike fractions; Primary 4 brings mixed numbers and fractions of a set. Every one of those assumes the child genuinely understands what the denominator counts.
Topics in primary mathematics are cumulative, which is the argument for treating the six years as a single programme rather than a series of annual courses. Frequently asked questions
Why does my child think 1/8 is bigger than 1/4?
Because 8 is bigger than 4, and until now bigger digits have meant bigger numbers. The fix is visual rather than verbal — show the two side by side.
What are like fractions?
Fractions with the same denominator, such as 3/8 and 5/8. Primary 2 compares these and unit fractions only; unlike fractions come at Primary 3.
Does the whole have to be split into equal parts?
Yes, and questions test it. A shape divided into four unequal pieces does not show quarters, and children are asked to spot exactly that.
How large can denominators be at Primary 2?
Up to 12, as specified in the syllabus.
