Factors and Multiples: A Primary 4 Guide

Primary 4 covers factors, multiples and their relationship, determining whether a 1-digit number is a factor of a number within 100, finding common factors of two numbers, determining multiples, and finding common multiples of two 1-digit numbers.

What factors and multiples actually asks of a Primary 4 student

Factors and multiples are two views of the same relationship, and children confuse them constantly. If 3 is a factor of 12, then 12 is a multiple of 3 — one statement, read from either end.

The topic depends entirely on times-table fluency. A child still calculating 7 × 8 cannot search for factors efficiently, so weakness here is often a Primary 3 problem surfacing rather than a new one.

Common factors and common multiples are the first time a child works with two numbers at once and looks for what they share — the thinking that becomes HCF and LCM at secondary level.

What the syllabus covers

Under the MOE primary mathematics syllabus, factors and multiples at Primary 4 covers:

  • factors, multiples and their relationship
  • determining if a 1-digit number is a factor of a given number within 100
  • finding the common factors of two given numbers
  • determining if a number is a multiple of a given 1-digit number
  • finding the common multiples of two given 1-digit numbers

Where the marks actually go

Swapping the two words. Asked for factors of 12, the child lists 12, 24, 36 — the multiples.

Incomplete factor lists, usually missing 1, the number itself, or the pair partway through.

Common multiples listed without checking both numbers, so a number that is a multiple of one but not the other slips in.

How to practise this properly

Fix the vocabulary with one sentence: factors divide into it, multiples come out of it. Repeat it until the child says it back automatically.

Find factors in pairs. Start at 1 × the number and work inwards; the list is complete when the pairs meet, and nothing gets missed.

For common multiples, list a few of each and circle the shared ones rather than trying to spot them mentally.

Practise with numbers whose factors are not obvious, such as 36 or 48, where a systematic search actually matters.

What this leads to

Primary 5 and 6 fraction work depends on finding common denominators, which is common multiples under a different name. At secondary level this becomes HCF, LCM and prime factorisation.

Mathematics at primary level does not reset each year, so neither does our teaching. The same MOE-aligned curriculum runs from Primary 1 to Primary 6, which means we can tell the difference between a child who has not met an idea and one who met it and never secured it. Those two situations look identical on a worksheet and need completely different responses.

Primes are not named in the Primary 4 syllabus content; factors and multiples are. Prime factorisation comes at secondary level.

Why does my child struggle with this topic?

Usually because times tables are not yet automatic. Searching for factors requires instant recall, so the difficulty is often inherited from Primary 3.
