Calculus is where earlier weaknesses come due

Sec 4 A-Math is dominated by calculus and trigonometric identities, and both are unusually unforgiving of what came before. Differentiation exposes shaky algebraic manipulation immediately; integration then exposes shaky differentiation. Students often conclude they cannot do calculus when the actual problem is two years old and entirely fixable.

The paper rewards a written argument

More than any other O-Level maths paper, A-Math gives marks for reasoning. Proving an identity, justifying a stationary point, showing why a result follows — these are worth marks in their own right, and students who work mentally and write only the conclusion lose them without ever being wrong.
