Number patterns ask students to spot a rule in a sequence and express it algebraically. It is the first place in the secondary syllabus where algebra is used to describe something rather than to solve something.
The step that matters is generalising: moving from “add three each time” to an expression for the nth term. Students who can do this find later work on sequences straightforward; students who cannot tend to guess.
