The Singapore Secondary 1 mathematics syllabus covers numbers and operations, algebraic expressions and equations, ratio and proportion, basic geometry and mensuration, and an introduction to statistics. Algebra carries the most downstream weight. Schools sequence the same syllabus differently, so treat any term-by-term plan as indicative.

Parents often ask for a plain list of what Secondary 1 mathematics actually contains, without the jargon. This is that list, grouped the way the material is normally taught, with a note on which parts carry weight later. The reason a plain list is useful is that most parents encounter the syllabus only in fragments — a worksheet here, a test paper there — and it is genuinely hard to tell from those fragments whether a difficult week is a small local problem or the start of something structural. Seeing the whole year laid out makes that judgement possible.
One caution before the list. Schools sequence the same syllabus differently, and Integrated Programme schools frequently compress it to make room for other material. Treat what follows as the shape of the year rather than a week-by-week timetable, and check your own school’s scheme of work for the specifics.
Numbers and operations
Integers, rational numbers, real numbers; the four operations extended to negatives; approximation and estimation; laws of indices in introductory form.
If you read only one entry on this list, read this one. Almost every recurring error we see in upper secondary traces back to something here. A student who is fractionally unsure about what happens when a negative is subtracted will produce sign errors in quadratics, in trigonometry, and eventually in calculus — and each of those will be diagnosed as a topic problem when it is really a Secondary 1 problem wearing a later costume.

Algebraic expressions and equations
Using letters to represent numbers; expanding and factorising; simplifying expressions; solving linear equations; formulating equations from worded situations.
Why it matters later: this is the load-bearing wall of the entire secondary curriculum. Secondary 2 builds simultaneous equations on it; A-Math assumes complete fluency in it from day one.
Ratio, rate and proportion
Ratio in its various forms, direct and inverse proportion, rate problems, percentage applications including profit, loss and simple interest.
Why it matters later: familiar from primary school, but now handled algebraically. Students who continue solving these pictorially slow down markedly under time pressure.

Geometry and mensuration
Angles and parallel lines, triangles and quadrilaterals, polygons, perimeter and area of composite figures, volume and surface area of prisms and cylinders.
Why it matters later: geometry in Secondary 1 is mostly about learning to justify a claim in writing. That habit is what Secondary 3 geometry proofs depend on.
Introductory statistics
Collecting and presenting data; bar graphs, pie charts, line graphs; reading and interpreting statistical diagrams.
Why it matters later: light in Secondary 1, but the interpretation habits formed here carry through to the data-handling questions that appear in every subsequent year.
Algebra is front-loaded for a reason
Schools vary, but a common shape is numbers and algebra front-loaded into Terms 1 and 2, geometry and mensuration in Term 3, and statistics late. That ordering is deliberate: algebra needs the most consolidation time, so it is introduced first.
That ordering has a consequence worth planning around. Because algebra is taught early and then assumed for the rest of the year, the window in which a gap can be closed cheaply is roughly Terms 1 and 2. After that, the same gap is being carried through geometry, mensuration and statistics, and closing it means doing two jobs at once. Families who act in April generally spend far less effort than families who act in September.

Where can I find the official Secondary 1 syllabus document?
The Ministry of Education publishes the mathematics syllabuses on moe.gov.sg, and SEAB publishes examination formats separately. We use those as the only sources for syllabus facts, and we would encourage the same — much of what circulates informally about the syllabus is outdated by a revision or two.
How does the Secondary 1 syllabus differ between Express and Normal courses?
The topics overlap substantially; the differences are in depth, pace and the complexity of problems set. Under Full Subject-Based Banding a student may also take mathematics at a more demanding level than their other subjects, so the mapping between course and syllabus is less rigid than it once was.
Which Secondary 1 topics appear again in the O-Level examination?
Most of them, in extended form. The algebra strand in particular runs directly into Secondary 3 and 4 work, and geometry reasoning habits formed in Secondary 1 underpin later proof questions. Very little of Secondary 1 is self-contained, which is why gaps here surface years later.
Can we work through the syllabus ahead of school?
It rarely helps as much as families expect. Students who arrive having seen content once often disengage in class, and superficial familiarity can mask a gap. Consolidating the current year properly is usually a better use of the same hours than covering the next one early.
