Choosing a math tuition centre in Singapore comes down to five checkable things: what happens in the first lesson, actual class size, tutor consistency, how progress is reported, and whether the format matches your child. Location and facilities matter less than parents expect.
Most guides to choosing a tuition centre list things that are easy to observe and weakly related to outcomes — facilities, materials, proximity. This one focuses on what actually predicts whether your child will be better at mathematics in six months.
Proximity, facilities and materials are all real considerations, and none of them predicts much. They dominate the typical checklist because they can be assessed in ten minutes on a first visit, which makes them convenient rather than informative.
The questions below take longer to ask and are considerably harder to answer well, which is exactly why the answers tell you something.
Start with the diagnosis question
Ask what happens in the first lesson. Centres that begin with diagnosis are working from evidence; centres that begin with the current school topic are working from a schedule.
The answer separates two philosophies more cleanly than any other question. A centre that begins by diagnosing is treating your child as a specific case with a specific gap. A centre that begins with this week’s school topic is running a schedule that your child has been slotted into, and the fit between the schedule and the gap is left to chance.
This single question separates more effectively than any other, because it reveals whether the centre treats your child as an individual or as an enrolment.
Ask for the actual class size
Advertised caps and real numbers differ. Ask how many students are currently in the class your child would join, at the specific timeslot. Then ask what happens when a student falls behind the group.
Ask who teaches, and for how long
Tutor consistency is under-discussed and heavily determines outcomes. A student who has had three tutors in a year has had to rebuild trust three times, and mathematics support depends on a student admitting what they do not understand. Ask how progress is reported
You should expect, within a month, a specific statement of what the gap is and what is being done about it. If reporting consists of attendance and general encouragement, no diagnosis is happening.
Consider format before location
Parents often start with proximity, which is reasonable given Singapore traffic, but format matters more. A self-directed student short on time may be better served by an online course than by a weekly class thirty minutes away.

- Facilities. Pleasant rooms do not teach mathematics.
- Volume of materials. More worksheets is not more learning; targeted practice is.
- Marketing claims about outcomes. Under Singapore advertising standards these cannot promise grades, and unverifiable statistics are not evidence.

Switching centres mid-year
Parents worry about disruption, and some disruption is real — a new tutor needs a few weeks to understand a student. But staying somewhere ineffective for continuity is a larger cost, particularly in an examination year.
The practical test is whether you have received a specific diagnosis. If after a full term nobody can tell you what your child’s actual difficulty is, continuity is not buying you anything.
If you do switch, bring the evidence with you: recent school papers, marked work, and any written feedback. A new tutor who starts with that material can diagnose considerably faster.
How the centre handles a student who falls behind
Worth asking explicitly, because the answer reveals how the teaching actually runs. Every group contains students moving at different speeds, and what happens to the slowest is a design decision rather than an accident.
Reasonable answers involve additional practice targeted at the specific gap, or a conversation with parents about what is happening. An answer that amounts to “they keep up or they move down” tells you the group is being taught rather than the students.

Whichever your child will actually attend consistently after a long day. Attendance reliability affects outcomes more than a modest difference in teaching quality does.
Is one-to-one better than group tuition?
Not usually, and it costs considerably more. Most difficulties at a given level are common across students and are addressed efficiently in a small group. One-to-one earns its premium for unusual gaps, specific learning needs, or scheduling constraints.
How long should we give a centre before deciding it is not working?
One term is a fair test, provided you receive a specific diagnosis within the first month. If after four weeks nobody can tell you what the actual problem is, that is informative on its own.
How large should a class be?
The number matters less than whether the tutor sees every student’s written work during a session — not their answers, their working. Where that happens, a student who has adopted a wrong method is caught within a week rather than rehearsing it for a term.
What should I bring to a first meeting?
A recent school paper, ideally one that went badly, and any marked work with teacher comments. These are worth more than any description a parent can give, because they show the actual errors rather than the reported ones, and they save diagnostic time.
