PSLE Maths Heuristics: Which One, and When

Heuristics are problem-solving strategies rather than formulas. The skill at PSLE is recognising which strategy suits a problem, not memorising a list of them.

Why heuristics are taught at all

A heuristic is a way in when the route is not obvious. Working backwards, guess and check, drawing a diagram, looking for a pattern, simplifying the problem — each is a way of making an unfamiliar question tractable.

They matter because the PSLE deliberately sets problems students have not seen in that exact form. Recall alone will not answer them.

The heuristics worth being fluent in by Primary 6:

  • Drawing a diagram or model
  • Working backwards from the end state
  • Guess and check, narrowed systematically
  • Looking for a pattern
  • Simplifying the problem or trying a smaller case
  • Making a systematic list

The recognition problem

Most students can execute a heuristic once told which to use. Choosing it unprompted is the harder skill, and it is what the exam actually tests.

That choice improves with exposure to varied problems, not with practising each heuristic in isolation. A worksheet of guess-and-check questions teaches execution and removes the decision.

Matching strategy to problem

Working backwards suits problems that describe a sequence of changes ending in a known result. Guess and check suits problems with a small range of plausible answers and a clear test.

Drawing suits anything involving comparison or arrangement. Looking for a pattern suits sequences and repeated structures. Simplifying suits problems whose numbers are intimidating but whose structure is simple.

Building the judgement

Ask what kind of problem this is before asking how to solve it. Naming the type is the step most students skip.

When a student is stuck, resist naming the heuristic. Ask instead what they know and what they want — the strategy usually presents itself, and the child gets the credit for finding it.

How many heuristics does my child need?

Fluency in a handful matters more than familiarity with many. Six well-understood strategies cover most PSLE problems.

Is guess and check acceptable in the exam?

Yes, provided the working is shown and the checking is systematic. It is a legitimate method, not a last resort.

Why can my child do heuristics on worksheets but not in exams?

Because the worksheet names the strategy and the exam does not. Practise with mixed problems where the choice is left to the student.

Should I tell my child which method to use when they are stuck?

Ask what they know and what they need instead. Being told the method removes exactly the skill the question was testing.
