A large share of lost PSLE marks come from misreading rather than miscalculating. Extracting what is given, what is wanted and what is implied is a teachable skill.
The arithmetic is rarely the problem
When we work through a wrong answer with a student, the calculation is usually correct. What went wrong happened before any numbers were written: the question was misread.
That is good news, because reading is more teachable than intuition. It responds to a routine.
What goes wrong in the reading
Students answer the question they expected rather than the one asked. A problem that supplies a total and asks for a difference will be answered with the total by a student reading at speed.
Implied information is missed. “Half as many again” and “twice as many” describe different relationships, and neither is stated as a calculation.
Multi-part questions are answered for part (a) only, or the answer to (a) is not carried into (b) correctly.
A routine that works
Read the whole problem once without touching a pencil. Then read it again, underlining what is given and circling what is asked.
Write the quantities down with their units before starting. Half the misreadings become visible at this point, because a quantity that cannot be named clearly has not been understood.
The four questions to ask before calculating:
- What am I given, and in what units?
- What exactly is being asked for?
- What is implied but not stated?
- Roughly what size should the answer be?
Checking at the end
Re-read the question after arriving at an answer and confirm the answer matches what was asked, in the right units.
Ask whether the number is sensible. A speed of 400 km/h for a cyclist, or a remainder larger than the divisor, signals an error that arithmetic checking will not catch.

A weakness at this stage rarely announces itself. It surfaces a year or two later wearing a different name, which is why parents so often report that the trouble “started” in a year where it merely became visible. Frequently asked questions
My child rushes and misreads. How do I slow them down?
Give a rule rather than an instruction to be careful: read once without a pencil, then underline and circle. Rules change behaviour; exhortations do not.
Is underlining really worth the time?
It costs seconds and prevents the single largest category of lost marks, so yes.
What if my child understands the question but cannot start?
Have them write down what is given with units. The first step usually becomes visible once the information is on paper rather than in the paragraph.
Do these habits transfer to secondary school?
Directly. The same reading discipline is what separates students on O-Level word problems.
