Marks at PSLE are awarded for correct working as well as correct answers. Units, legible method and answering the question asked are worth real marks independent of the mathematics.
Presentation is not decoration
Parents often treat neatness as a virtue unrelated to marks. At PSLE it is directly related. Method marks exist, and they can only be awarded for working that a marker can read and follow.
A student who works mentally and writes only the answer is gambling the whole question on getting it right, when they could have secured most of the marks by writing three lines.
Units
An answer without units is incomplete where the question involved a quantity. It is the easiest mark on the paper to lose and one of the commonest.
Unit errors also hide calculation errors. A student who writes cm where they meant cm² may have used the wrong formula, and the unit is the clue.
Working that earns credit
Each step on its own line, with the operation visible. A marker following a chain of reasoning can award credit at the point it goes wrong; a marker looking at a block of numbers cannot.
Crossed-out work should be struck through with a single line rather than obliterated. If the replacement is wrong and the original was right, the original can still be credited.
The answer statement
Where the question asks about a situation, the answer should refer to it. “35 books” answers the question; “35” leaves the marker to infer what it refers to.
For multi-part questions, label each part clearly. Answers written in the wrong place are marked as answers to the wrong question.

- Every answer carries its unit
- One step per line, operations visible
- Crossed-out work struck through once, not scribbled out
- Final answer stated in terms of the question
- Parts labelled (a), (b), (c) in the right places

When the same curriculum carries a child from Primary 1 to Primary 6, nobody has to reconstruct where an earlier gap was left, and no year is taught as though the previous one did not happen. It also means a child moving up does not have to adjust to a different way of explaining the same ideas.

Frequently asked questions
Are method marks really awarded at PSLE?
Working carries marks in the longer paper, and a correct answer with no working may not earn full credit. Showing method is worth the time.
How much working is enough?
Enough that someone else could follow the reasoning without guessing. Each distinct step on its own line is a reasonable standard.
Does untidy handwriting cost marks?
Only where it makes the work unreadable — but that happens more often than parents expect under time pressure.
Should my child rub out mistakes?
A single line through is better. Erased work cannot be credited, and sometimes the erased version was the correct one.
