PSLE Math Paper 2: The Marks Most Students Leave Behind

PSLE Mathematics Paper 2 carries the extended problem-solving questions and allows a calculator. Most recoverable marks sit in the middle of the paper, where method marks are forfeited by working that is not shown. Method marks are awarded for the approach and are recoverable even when the final answer is wrong.

Paper 2 is where PSLE mathematics is usually won or lost, and where the most recoverable marks sit. This is a practical guide to how the paper behaves and where students give marks away unnecessarily.

That is a claim about where the recoverable marks sit rather than about difficulty. Paper 1 rewards fluency that has been built over years and is hard to change in the final months. Paper 2 rewards behaviour — how a student allocates time, whether they show reasoning, whether they attempt a question they cannot finish — and behaviour can be changed in weeks.

For a family with limited time before the examination, that difference is the whole strategy.

Paper 2 awards method, not just answers

Paper 1 is calculator-free and rewards fluency across many topics quickly. Paper 2 permits a calculator and rewards sustained reasoning on fewer, longer questions — including the high-mark items at the end that attract most of the attention.

The consequence is that Paper 2 awards method. A correct answer with no visible working can score less than an incorrect answer with sound method shown.

Four sources of recoverable marks

  1. Method marks not shown. The largest single source of avoidable loss. Students who solve mentally to save time lose more than they save.
  2. Mid-paper questions rushed. Students hurry through questions they can do in order to reach ones they cannot, and make errors in the process.
  3. Units and final statements omitted. Small, consistent, entirely avoidable.
  4. The last question abandoned too early. Partial method attracts partial credit; a blank attracts none.

A time discipline that protects easy marks

A workable discipline: pass through the paper once answering everything comfortable, leaving harder items marked. Then return. This protects the marks that are securely available before spending time on the ones that may not be.

Students who work strictly in order frequently run out of time with easy marks unattempted at the back — a purely strategic loss.

Classify every error into one of three types

Every error classified into one of three types: comprehension (misread the question), method (wrong approach), or execution (right approach, arithmetic slip). Each needs a different response, and lumping them together as “careless” fixes none of them.

Our free past-year papers include worked video solutions, which makes this classification far easier for parents. The Primary 6 programme builds the review habit explicitly.

What showing working actually means

Parents often tell children to show their working without either party being clear what that means. It does not mean writing more. It means making the reasoning followable by someone who cannot see inside your head.

In practice, three things earn method marks: stating what you are finding before you find it, showing the operation that produces each intermediate value, and labelling what each number represents. A line reading “Total = 4 x 35 = 140” does all three. A line reading “140” does none of them.

The habit is worth building well before the examination year, because under pressure students revert to whatever they normally do. A child who normally writes only answers will write only answers in the hall, whatever they were told the week before.

Technique needs less practice than families assume

Less than most families assume, provided it is deliberate. Two or three full papers under proper conditions, each reviewed thoroughly with errors classified, teaches more technique than a dozen papers completed casually.

The reason is that technique errors repeat. A student who abandons long questions early will do it in every paper until someone names the pattern. Once named, it usually corrects within two attempts.

Frequently asked questions

How many marks is PSLE Mathematics Paper 2 worth?

Paper 2 carries the larger share of the marks and the extended problem-solving questions. Exact weightings and durations are published by SEAB and are worth checking directly, as examination formats are reviewed periodically.

Should my child attempt the last question first?

Generally no. The final questions carry the most marks but also the most risk. Securing the accessible marks first, then returning with whatever time remains, produces better outcomes for most students.

Does showing working really matter if the answer is right?

Yes, in Paper 2. Method marks are awarded for the approach, and they are recoverable even when the final answer is wrong. Working shown is the lowest-cost insurance available in the whole examination.

How is PSLE mathematics graded?

Results are reported as Achievement Levels rather than raw aggregate scores. Exact band boundaries and paper weightings are published by SEAB and are worth checking directly, since examination formats are reviewed periodically and informal summaries date quickly.

Should my child use a calculator throughout Paper 2?

A calculator is permitted in Paper 2, but reaching for it reflexively costs time on straightforward arithmetic. The students who use it well tend to use it selectively — for the genuinely tedious calculations rather than for everything.

What if my child runs out of time?

That is usually a strategy issue rather than a speed issue. Passing through the paper once answering everything comfortable, then returning to the harder items, protects marks that are securely available. Working strictly in order frequently leaves accessible marks unattempted at the back.

How should we review a paper together?

Classify every error as comprehension, method or execution, because each needs a different response. Lumping them together as careless fixes none of them. The worked video solutions in our free paper library make this practical even if you are not confident marking the mathematics yourself.

A note on what we can and cannot promise: the patterns described here come from what we have seen in our own classes over the years. They are not a forecast for any individual student. Progress in mathematics is produced jointly — our teachers work hard for a student who is willing to put in the effort, with support at home. No tuition centre can promise a grade, and we do not.

About Odyssey Math Tuition. We are a mathematics-only tuition centre at Hexacube, 160 Changi Road, about three minutes from Eunos MRT, teaching Primary 1 through to JC2. The centre was founded in 2013 by Mr Justin Tan, who holds a BSc (Honours) in Applied Mathematics and Economics from the National University of Singapore, has taught Singapore mathematics since 2012, and still teaches a JC2 H2 Mathematics class himself. You can meet the full teaching team or read questions parents ask most often.
