The choice between H1 and H2 Mathematics should be driven by university course requirements first and by realistic workload second. It is a consequential decision that is often made quickly.
Start with the requirements
Many university courses specify H2 Mathematics, particularly in engineering, the sciences, computing and quantitative economics. Where a course requires it, the decision is largely made.
Check the actual published requirements for the courses under consideration rather than relying on general impressions. Requirements change and they vary between institutions.
Questions to settle before choosing:
- Do the target courses require H2 Mathematics?
- What is the rest of the subject combination?
- How did O-Level A-Math actually go, and why?
- Is support in place from the start if H2 is chosen?
- What is the deadline for changing, and is it reversible?
The difference in content and demand
H2 is broader and deeper, with a substantial statistics component and considerably more calculus. H1 covers less ground and goes less far into it.
The workload difference is real and should be weighed against the rest of a student’s subject combination rather than in isolation.
Being honest about capacity
A student who is struggling with O-Level A-Math will find H2 demanding. That is not an argument against attempting it, but it is an argument for planning support from the start rather than after the first set of results.
Equally, dropping to H1 to protect a grade only helps if the course a student wants does not require H2. Otherwise it closes the door it was meant to protect.
Timing
The decision is usually made early in JC1, sometimes before a student has really experienced H2. Where a switch is possible later, knowing the deadline matters.
If in doubt and the requirements allow it, starting with H2 and reviewing after the first assessments is often more reversible than the alternative.

In practice that often means spending a lesson on something from two years ago in order to fix what is failing today.
