The main risk of studying maths online is that the study device is also the distraction device. The fixes are structural rather than motivational: study on the largest available screen, keep the phone in another room, and work in short blocks with a written output. Why willpower is the wrong lever
Telling a fifteen-year-old to resist notifications while working on the device that produces them is asking for something adults routinely fail at. It is a design problem rather than a character problem.
The interruption cost is also worse than it looks. Returning to a half-finished mathematics question is not like returning to a paragraph — the working state is gone and much of it has to be rebuilt.
Structural fixes that work
- Use the largest screen available. A laptop or tablet for the lesson, paper beside it. A phone is fine for reviewing, poor for working.
- Phone in another room. Not face-down, not silent — another room. The presence of the device costs attention even unused.
- Short blocks with a written output. Thirty minutes ending in written working is verifiable; ninety minutes ending in a feeling is not.
- One topic per session. Switching topics mid-session is itself a form of distraction.
Paper is not optional
The single most reliable indicator of whether online study is real is whether paper is out. Mathematics cannot be done in the head at secondary level, and a session with no written trace was almost certainly a session of watching.
This also happens to be the easiest thing for a parent to check from the doorway without asking anything — which makes it more useful than any conversation about effort.
Using the format to your advantage
Self-paced material has one genuine advantage here: because nothing is scheduled, a student can stop when concentration goes rather than sitting through another forty minutes of a class they have stopped absorbing.
The corresponding discipline is to stop deliberately and resume later, not to drift. Unlimited replays make stopping cheap, which is the point.
When distraction is the symptom, not the cause
Persistent avoidance of one subject is often not about phones. A student who focuses on other work and cannot settle to mathematics may be avoiding difficulty rather than being distracted by a device.
