Odyssey Math Tuition’s online courses are designed to sit alongside a weekly class rather than replace it. The class supplies a teacher who notices when a student stops working; the online course supplies an explanation at the moment of difficulty, which is usually a weekday evening.
The two formats are often presented as alternatives. In practice most of the families who get the most out of an online course are also attending a weekly class — ours or somewhere else’s — and using each for what it is actually good at.
What a weekly class does that a recording cannot
A live teacher notices. That sounds soft, but it is the single largest difference. A student who has quietly stopped writing, who nods without understanding, who has been copying rather than solving — a person catches that within a lesson or two. No recording ever will.
A class also creates a deadline. Work gets done because someone will look at it on Saturday. For a large number of teenagers that external structure is doing more work than anyone admits.
What an online course does that a class cannot
It is there on Tuesday at 9pm. That is the whole argument, and it is a strong one. The gap between hitting a wall and getting help drops from six days to twenty minutes, which is the difference between finishing the homework and abandoning it.
It also repeats without limit and without judgement, and it lets a student go back to last year’s topic, which no weekly class has time to re-teach.
A division of labour that works
- Class: new material, diagnosis, accountability, the questions a student did not know they had.
- Online course: the mid-week wall, repetition, revision before a test, and topics from previous years.
Families attending tuition elsewhere use the courses the same way. Nothing in the design assumes a student has left another arrangement, and we say so on the e-learning page explicitly.
What this looks like across a week
Class on Saturday. Homework attempted Monday or Tuesday. Wall hit on Tuesday — open the topic, watch, retry. Topical practice on Thursday if the topic was shaky. Topical test at the weekend to check it held. That is roughly ninety minutes of focused work outside class, which is about what we suggest at lower secondary.

Do I need to leave my current tuition centre to use the online course?
No. The courses are built to work alongside a weekly class, including classes at other centres.
Is it worth paying for both?
It depends on what is going wrong. If a student is coping in class but stalls on homework mid-week, the online course addresses exactly that. If the problem is that nobody notices when they disengage, a class matters more.
Which levels can combine both?
Online courses run from Secondary 1 to Junior College 2. Physical classes run from Primary 1 to JC2, so any secondary or JC student can combine them.
How much extra time does the online course take?
Used well, it replaces time already being spent being stuck rather than adding to it.
