A useful method sheet records what you personally forget and the trigger for each method, not everything in the syllabus. Building it is the revision; the sheet is a by-product.
Why most formula sheets are useless
A sheet copied from a textbook contains everything, which means it contains nothing useful. Under time pressure nobody reads a dense two-sided page of formulae they already know.
The value is in selection. A sheet of the twenty things this particular student keeps forgetting is worth more than a complete reference.
What to record
The trigger, not just the formula. “When the question gives a rate of change, look for connected rates” is more useful than the chain rule written out.
The step you personally always miss. Everyone has three or four, and they are usually consistent across a whole year.
The conditions attached to a method — when a test applies, when an approximation is valid, when a formula requires independence.
What belongs on the sheet:
- The trigger that tells you a method applies
- Steps you personally always forget
- Conditions and assumptions attached to each method
- Notation the mark scheme demands
- Nothing that is already automatic
Building it as you go
Add to it after every paper, from the review rather than from the textbook. Anything that cost a mark goes in; anything that did not, does not.
Review the sheet weekly and delete what is now automatic. A shrinking sheet is evidence of progress and keeps the remaining entries salient.
Using it
Read it before a practice paper, not during. The point is to prime recall, not to create a crutch.
In the final fortnight it becomes the main revision document, because by then it contains precisely the material that has not stuck.
Write it by hand. Typing is faster and produces something that has passed through the fingers without passing through the head, which defeats the purpose — the act of deciding what is worth writing is where most of the value sits.

When the same curriculum carries a child from Primary 1 to Primary 6, nobody has to reconstruct where an earlier gap was left, and no year is taught as though the previous one did not happen. It also means a child moving up does not have to adjust to a different way of explaining the same ideas.

Frequently asked questions
Is a formula sheet provided in the exam?
A list of formulae is provided at A-Level, which is exactly why a personal sheet should record triggers and conditions rather than formulae.
How long should the sheet be?
Short enough to read in a few minutes. If it is longer than that, it is a textbook and will not be used.
When should a student start building it?
From the first term of JC1, adding after each marked paper. Building it at the end defeats the purpose.
Should items be removed?
Yes, once they are automatic. A shrinking sheet is the sign it is working.
