Self-paced online courses suit students who will actually use them. Where the difficulty is motivation, accountability or a foundational gap that needs diagnosing, a physical class is usually the better answer.
The honest limits
A recorded course cannot notice that a student has stopped attempting questions. It cannot see the working, and it cannot ask why a particular step was chosen.
Those are precisely the things that identify a foundational gap, which is why a course works better as reinforcement than as diagnosis.
Where it works less well
A student who needs external accountability. Self-paced means self-directed, and for some students that is the missing ingredient rather than the solution.
A student with a gap nobody has identified. Working through a course at the current level will not surface a problem two years back.
A student who avoids the subject. Avoidance and unlimited flexibility combine badly.
A physical class is probably the better answer when:
- The gap has not been identified yet
- Accountability is the missing ingredient
- The student actively avoids the subject
- Nobody has watched the student work in months
- Results and effort have diverged and nobody knows why
Where it works well
Alongside classes, for revisiting methods between lessons and for going back to earlier material without waiting for it to be scheduled.
For students who are self-directed and simply need access to good explanations at the moment confusion arrives.
For catching up after missed lessons, or for revision where the content is known and needs reactivating.
Deciding honestly
The question worth asking is whether your child will actually open it on a Tuesday night unprompted. If the honest answer is no, the course is not the intervention that is needed.
We would rather say that than sell a course that sits unused.

Where Odyssey fits
Our online courses run from Secondary 1 to JC2 and are included free with enrolment in physical classes, which is the combination that works for most students.
We teach maths only, in small classes at Hexacube, 160 Changi Road #01-02, about three minutes from Eunos MRT. See the primary and secondary programmes, our MOE-aligned curriculum, schedules and fees, or the tutors who teach. Free video solutions to past-year papers are on Odyssey Math TV.
This is why we teach the primary years as one arc rather than six separate ones. Our MOE-aligned curriculum runs from Primary 1 to Primary 6, so when something goes wrong we can trace it to the year it actually formed and repair it there, instead of drilling the level where it happens to be showing up. That distinction usually decides whether extra work produces improvement or simply produces more work.
