Why Copying a Model Answer Does Not Build Mastery

Reading a worked solution produces the feeling of understanding without the ability to reproduce it. The test is whether the child can do the question unaided a day later.

The illusion of understanding

Following someone else’s solution is far easier than producing one. Every step looks reasonable in sequence, and the child genuinely does understand each one as they read it.

What is missing is the hard part: deciding what to do first with no solution in front of you. That decision is the actual skill, and reading past it repeatedly never builds it.

Why it persists

It is efficient in the short term. A worked answer resolves the immediate homework problem and ends the frustration, which is a reasonable thing for a tired family to want on a weeknight.

The cost appears later, when a similar question in an exam produces the same blankness. The child is not lazy and has not forgotten; they never had the skill in the first place.

What to do instead

Give the first step only, then stop. Most stuck students are stuck at the entry point, and once past it can continue unaided.

If a full solution has been read, close it and re-attempt from scratch a day later. That gap is what converts recognition into recall.

Ask the child to explain the solution to you without looking. Explaining exposes the gaps that reading conceals.

A workable sequence when your child is stuck:

  • Ask what they know and what the question wants
  • Offer the first step only
  • Let them continue alone even if slowly
  • If the solution is read, re-attempt unaided a day later
  • Ask them to explain it back without looking

Using worked solutions well

They are excellent for checking method after an attempt, and for seeing how working should be set out. They are poor as a first resort.

The rule worth holding: attempt, then check. Never check, then attempt.

Understanding an explanation and generating one are different skills. The second only develops through attempting unaided.

Should I never show a worked solution?

Show it after an attempt, as a check on method. The problem is using it as the first response to being stuck.

How long should a child struggle before help?

Long enough to try something, short enough not to become distressed. A few minutes of genuine attempt is usually the useful window.

Is re-attempting the same question worthwhile?

Yes, provided there is a gap of a day or so. Immediately afterwards it tests memory rather than understanding.
