A hint keeps the thinking with the student; a full solution transfers it away. The difference is almost entirely in how the question is asked.
The same tool, two very different uses
Asking “solve this” produces a finished solution and removes the work. Asking “give me a hint for the first step” produces a way in and leaves the rest.
The tool is identical in both cases. What changes is whether the student does the mathematics.
Why the distinction matters more than it seems
The hardest part of a maths problem is usually the first decision — what kind of problem is this, and what should I try. That decision is what exams test and what a full solution removes.
A student who has read solutions all term arrives at an exam having practised comprehension rather than problem-solving, and the two feel identical until the paper starts.
Framing that keeps the work with the student
Ask for the first step only. Ask what kind of problem it is. Ask what is worth trying, without being told the outcome. Ask for a similar but easier example.
All of these leave the student with something to do, which is the entire point.
Better questions to ask a tool:
- “Give me a hint for the first step only”
- “What kind of problem is this?”
- “Show me a similar but easier example”
- “I got this answer — where did I go wrong?”
- “Is my method reasonable, without telling me the answer?”
Setting the expectation at home
This is worth stating explicitly rather than assuming. Most children default to asking for the answer because that is the obvious thing to ask for.
A simple household rule — hints allowed, solutions only after an attempt — is easier to enforce than a general instruction to use the tool responsibly.

Because each year assumes the last, we teach the primary levels as one continuous sequence. Our MOE-aligned curriculum covers Primary 1 through Primary 6, so repair happens at the source rather than at the surface. In practice that often means spending a lesson on something from two years ago in order to fix what is failing today.
