Worked solutions are a checking tool, not a teaching tool. Used after an attempt they are valuable; used before one they replace the learning.
The problem with answer keys
Most assessment books give the answer and little else. A bare answer tells a child they were wrong without telling them where, which is the least useful form of feedback available.
Full worked solutions are better, but they invite reading rather than attempting, which creates its own difficulty.
Marking without teaching
When marking at home, resist correcting immediately. Mark the question wrong, say which step it went wrong at, and hand it back.
That is more work than giving the correction and it is where the value is. A child who finds their own error remembers it; a child who is told it usually does not.
A simple marking routine:
- Mark right or wrong without commentary
- Point at the line where it first went wrong
- Ask the child what they think happened there
- Only explain if they cannot find it themselves
- Note the topic for later review
When you do not know the method yourself
This is common and not a problem. You can still ask useful questions: what does the question want, what have you tried, why did you choose that.
Singapore primary methods have changed since most parents were at school, and teaching a different method at home can leave a child holding two conflicting approaches. Checking the reasoning is safer than supplying an alternative.
Keeping the relationship intact
Homework battles cost more than the marks are worth. If a session is deteriorating, stopping is usually the right call.
It is entirely reasonable to outsource the teaching and keep your role as the person who notices, encourages and keeps the routine. Not every parent needs to be a maths tutor.

A weakness at this stage rarely announces itself. It surfaces a year or two later wearing a different name, which is why parents so often report that the trouble “started” in a year where it merely became visible. Teaching Primary 1 through Primary 6 on one curriculum is what makes tracing it back to the real starting point practical rather than speculative.

Frequently asked questions
I do not understand the method my child is taught. Is that a problem?
No. Asking what the question wants and what they tried is useful regardless. Teaching a different method can cause more confusion than it resolves.
Should I correct every mistake?
Point at where it went wrong and let the child find it. Supplying the correction is faster and teaches less.
What if homework always ends in an argument?
Stop the session. The cost to the relationship and to the child’s attitude to the subject outweighs one set of exercises.
Are assessment books worth buying?
They are useful for targeted practice on a known weakness. Working through one cover to cover is usually a poor use of time.
