Properties of Rectangles and Squares: A Primary 4 Guide

Primary 4 covers the properties of rectangles and squares, excluding diagonal properties, and drawing rectangles and squares.

What rectangles and squares actually asks of a Primary 4 student

Properties are stated formally for the first time: opposite sides equal and parallel, four right angles, and for a square all four sides equal.

The relationship matters as much as the list. Every square is a rectangle, but not every rectangle is a square — and questions are built around that.

Accurate drawing is examined too, which makes this partly a practical skill with a set square and ruler.

What the syllabus covers

Under the MOE primary mathematics syllabus, rectangles and squares at Primary 4 covers:

  • properties of rectangle and square, excluding diagonal properties
  • drawing rectangles and squares

Where the marks actually go

Stating that a square is not a rectangle. It is, and questions test the relationship deliberately.

Listing properties incompletely, usually omitting that opposite sides are parallel.

Drawings where the angles are visibly not right, which lose accuracy marks.

How to practise this properly

Have your child list every property from memory, then check against the definition. Gaps show up immediately.

Ask directly whether a square is a rectangle and why. The reasoning matters more than the answer.

Practise drawing with a set square until right angles are reliable without checking.

Look at rotated rectangles. A rectangle standing on a corner is still a rectangle, and recognition should not depend on orientation.

Use the properties to find missing lengths rather than only to describe shapes. If one side of a rectangle is given and the opposite side is not, the property supplies it — and that is how properties are actually used in questions at Primary 5 and 6.

Ask what would stop a given shape being a rectangle. Reasoning about what fails is a sharper test of understanding than listing what holds, and it prepares a child for the classification questions that appear in later years.

What this leads to

Primary 5 covers triangles, parallelograms, rhombuses and trapeziums, and Primary 6 finds unknown angles in composite figures made from these. The habit of reasoning from properties starts here.

It is also why a difficulty in one year is so often a leftover from an earlier one. Because our curriculum spans Primary 1 through Primary 6, we can go back to the genuine cause rather than treating the symptom in front of us. A child struggling with Primary 5 fractions frequently has a Primary 3 equivalence problem, and no amount of Primary 5 practice will resolve it.

Is a square a rectangle?

Yes. A square meets every condition for a rectangle and adds that all four sides are equal.

Are diagonal properties covered at Primary 4?

No, the syllabus explicitly excludes them at this level.

What equipment is needed for drawing?

A ruler and set square. Accuracy is part of what is marked.

Why does orientation confuse children?

Because shapes are usually shown upright in early years. Practising with rotated figures fixes it quickly.
