Primary 4 extends area and perimeter to finding one dimension of a rectangle given the other and its area or perimeter, finding the side of a square from its area or perimeter, and composite figures made of rectangles and squares.
What area and perimeter actually asks of a Primary 4 student
The questions reverse. Instead of being given the sides and asked for the area, a child is given the area and one side and asked for the other — which means undoing a multiplication.
That is algebraic thinking in disguise, two years before algebra is named, and children who see it as division rather than as a new rule cope much better.
Composite figures add a second demand: splitting a shape sensibly and keeping track of which lengths belong to which part.
What the syllabus covers
Under the MOE primary mathematics syllabus, area and perimeter at Primary 4 covers:
- finding one dimension of a rectangle given the other dimension and its area or perimeter
- finding the length of one side of a square given its area or perimeter
- finding the area and perimeter of composite figures made up of rectangles and squares
Where the marks actually go
Using perimeter where area was needed when working backwards, because the reverse question obscures which measure is involved.
Splitting a composite figure and then using a length that belonged to the whole shape rather than to the piece.
Forgetting that the perimeter of a composite figure is the outside boundary only, and including internal cut lines.
How to practise this properly
Write the formula, substitute what is known, and solve for what is missing. Making it explicit turns a puzzle into a routine.
Redraw composite figures split into parts, marking every length on the new diagram before calculating anything.
For perimeter, trace round the outside with a finger. Anything not traced is not part of the perimeter.
Check that a missing dimension is plausible: a rectangle of area 24 cannot have a side of 30.
What this leads to
Primary 5 adds triangles to composite figures and Primary 6 adds circles. The splitting technique learned here is used unchanged in both.
Mathematics at primary level does not reset each year, so neither does our teaching. The same MOE-aligned curriculum runs from Primary 1 to Primary 6, which means we can tell the difference between a child who has not met an idea and one who met it and never secured it. Those two situations look identical on a worksheet and need completely different responses.

How do you find a missing side from the area?
Divide the area by the known side. It is the reverse of multiplying to find the area.
