AI tools can usually be used on mathematics without harm if the order is fixed: attempt fully, then ask about one specific step, then re-do the question unaided. Used before an attempt, they remove the productive struggle where understanding is built. The rule that makes the difference
There is one rule and everything else follows from it: nothing is asked until something has been attempted. A student who has genuinely tried has a specific question. A student who has not has only the whole problem, and asking for the whole problem produces a solution to read rather than a difficulty resolved.
This is the same principle that makes worked solutions useful after an attempt and useless before one. The tool is not the variable; the order is.
A protocol worth agreeing in advance
- Attempt the question fully, on paper, including the parts you are unsure of.
- Identify the exact step where it stops working.
- Ask about that step only, not the question.
- Verify the reply against a trusted source, because fluent explanations can be wrong.
- Close everything and re-do the question from blank paper.
- If the same topic recurs three times, the problem is the topic — go to the topic lesson.
Step five is non-negotiable and is the one students drop first.
What to watch for
- Answer-shaped output that skips method. Singapore papers award method marks; a bare answer teaches nothing about earning them.
- Confident errors. A well-formatted wrong explanation is difficult for an unsure student to detect.
- Notation drift. Conventions vary between education systems, and a student can pick up habits an examiner will not recognise.
- Dependency. The tell is a student who cannot begin a question without opening something first.
Where it genuinely helps
Rephrasing an explanation that did not land, generating extra questions of a type already understood, and answering narrow factual questions about terminology. These are real uses and worth having.
What it cannot do is tell a student what they do not know. Diagnosis requires having watched someone work over time, which is why the marked topical tests in each online math tuition courses serve a different function entirely.
