Why short assessments deserve a different approach
In many schools a weighted assessment covers two or three topics taught in the preceding weeks. That narrow scope changes what sensible preparation looks like: there is no need for a revision timetable, and cramming the whole term is counter-productive.
Their real value is as an early warning. A weak result in a two-topic assessment in Secondary 1 identifies a specific gap at a point when repairing it takes an evening rather than a term.
Phase one: find out what is actually weak
Revision fails most often because it is spread evenly over material that is not evenly secure. The first week should produce a list, not coverage.
- Take a topical test cold on each major topic, with no revision beforehand.
- Record the mark and, more usefully, the type of error.
- Sort every topic into secure, shaky or absent.
- Set the secure pile aside completely for the next month.

Phase two: repair, one topic at a time
Identify precisely which topics are covered, then take the topical test for each one before revising. This takes half an hour and prevents revising what is already secure.
Repair only what the tests exposed. For lower secondary that is usually one topic, occasionally two.
If the exposed gap is in algebraic manipulation, treat it as urgent regardless of the assessment. It is the single most load-bearing skill in the secondary syllabus.
Phase three: whole papers under real conditions
Full-paper practice only pays once the weak topics are repaired. Before that it mostly measures the same gaps over and over.
- Sit the paper at the real time limit, in one sitting, without notes
- Mark it honestly, awarding method marks as an examiner would
- Categorise every lost mark as knowledge, method or execution
- Repair knowledge losses; drill execution losses under time

The two error types that need opposite treatment

The evening before, do a small number of timed questions rather than reading notes. Reading produces recognition; questions produce recall.
Sleep matters more than an extra hour at this level, and the marginal value of late revision on a two-topic assessment is very low.
Afterwards, look at the returned script properly. A pattern of careless errors in Secondary 1 that goes unaddressed is still there in Secondary 4.
