What kinematics actually asks of a student
Kinematics applies differentiation and integration to motion. Differentiating displacement gives velocity; differentiating velocity gives acceleration. Integration runs the chain backwards.
The calculus is material students already have. What makes kinematics hard is the vocabulary: displacement is not distance, speed is not velocity, and “instantaneously at rest” is a precise condition. Most lost marks are language errors rather than mathematical ones.
What the topic assumes you already have
Most difficulty in this topic is not caused by the topic itself. It is caused by something earlier that never became fluent. Check these first:
- Differentiation and integration, both fluent
- Solving equations, including quadratics, to find times
- Curve sketching to interpret motion
- Careful handling of the constant of integration with initial conditions

- Ignoring a change of direction, so distance is computed as a single integral

A revision approach that works
- Write the definitions of displacement, distance, speed and velocity at the top of the page.
- For distance travelled, always check whether velocity changes sign in the interval.
- Sketch the velocity graph before integrating.
- Practise interpreting answers in words, since questions usually ask for that.
