What trigonometric ratios actually asks of a student
Trigonometric ratios are the first place most students meet a relationship that cannot be derived from arithmetic. Sine, cosine and tangent describe fixed ratios between the sides of a right-angled triangle for a given angle, and they hold whatever the size of the triangle.
That last point is the conceptual core and the one most often skipped. The ratios depend on the angle alone, not on how large the triangle is. A student who has genuinely absorbed this stops trying to measure and starts choosing a ratio.
What the topic assumes you already have
Most difficulty in this topic is not caused by the topic. It is caused by something earlier that was never fluent. Before revising, check these:
- Pythagoras’ theorem, used confidently in both directions
- Identifying the hypotenuse and the side opposite a given angle
- Rearranging a simple equation to make any term the subject
- Calculator fluency, including degrees mode
If any of these is shaky, repair it first. Working on the new topic while the prerequisite is unstable is how students spend hours and move nothing.
Where marks are actually lost
- Calculator left in radians — every answer wrong, no method marks lost, all accuracy marks gone
- Choosing the wrong ratio because the triangle was not labelled before starting
- Rounding to three significant figures at an intermediate step, then compounding the error
- Finding the angle when the side was asked for, or the reverse
- Not drawing the diagram at all on a worded question
Almost none of these are conceptual. They are execution errors, which is encouraging: they respond to practice and to keeping a written record of the mistakes you personally repeat.
A revision approach that works
- Label every diagram before touching the calculator: hypotenuse, opposite, adjacent, relative to the angle in question.
- Practise both directions — given sides find the angle, given an angle find a side.
- Do a set of questions where the triangle is not drawn for you. This is where most marks are lost in examinations.
- Check that answers are sensible: a side cannot be longer than the hypotenuse.
