Secondary 3 is the steepest jump in the Singapore mathematics curriculum. Students take on two mathematics subjects, the content becomes abstract, and the syllabus assumes lower-secondary algebra is automatic. A dip in Term 1 is normal. A dip in Term 1 is common across the ability range and is not, on its own, evidence of a problem.

If you are reading this in March or April of your child’s Secondary 3 year, holding a report that does not look like the ones before it, you are in very familiar company. Secondary 3 produces more enquiries to us than any other level, and for structural reasons rather than because a cohort of students suddenly stopped trying.
Before anything else: a dip here is close to the norm rather than the exception, and it is not informative on its own. What distinguishes the ones who are not is rarely effort. It is whether a specific, locatable gap is sitting underneath the difficulty, and whether anyone has gone looking for it.

Any one of these on its own would be an adjustment. Arriving in the same term, they interact: the doubled workload removes the time that would have been used to build the missing fluency, and the missing fluency makes every piece of the doubled workload take longer. Families who address only the workload, by adding hours, often find the problem gets worse rather than better.
The subject splits. Students taking Additional Mathematics now have two mathematics subjects, two sets of homework and two examinations.
Content becomes abstract. Lower secondary problems usually describe a situation. A-Math problems frequently describe only a function.
Fluency is assumed, not taught. Secondary 3 does not revisit Secondary 1 and 2 algebra. It uses it.
The pace increases again. Less consolidation time, more content.
A Term 1 dip is usually adjustment
Usually not by itself. Most Secondary 3 students dip somewhere in the first two terms, and many recover without intervention once they adjust to the volume.
What is worth acting on is a dip with a specific shape: repeated algebraic errors, work taking dramatically longer than before, or a student who has begun avoiding one of the two subjects. Those indicate a locatable gap rather than an adjustment period.

A useful home check: give your child a Secondary 2 algebra exercise. If that is slow or error-prone, the Secondary 3 difficulty is a Secondary 2 gap and will not be fixed by Secondary 3 practice. If Secondary 2 work is fluent, the issue is genuinely the new content, which is a much easier problem.

When a child wants to drop A-Math
Worth taking seriously rather than dismissing. If the pathway ahead does not require A-Math, and carrying it is damaging performance in other subjects, dropping it can be the right call.
But make the decision on evidence, not on a bad term. Many students who want to drop in Term 1 are comfortable by Term 3, once the algebraic fluency catches up. Ask the subject teacher what they are seeing before deciding.

Is it normal for Secondary 3 grades to drop?

Should we get tuition for both E-Math and A-Math?

How long does it take to close a Secondary 2 algebra gap?
For most students, three to five weeks of focused work. Marks typically lag that by a further few weeks, because fluency has to become automatic before it shows up under examination conditions.
