What algebra actually asks of a Primary 6 student
This is the gateway to secondary mathematics. A letter stands for a number that is not yet known, and it can be operated on exactly like a number.
The notation carries meaning that has to be learned: 3a means 3 × a, and a/3 means a divided by 3. Neither is obvious.
Simplifying means collecting like terms — 3a + 2a is 5a — while 3a + 2b stays as it is, because a and b are different unknowns.

Under the MOE primary mathematics syllabus, algebra at Primary 6 covers:
- using a letter to represent an unknown number
- notation, representations and interpretation of simple algebraic expressions
- simplifying simple linear expressions excluding brackets
- evaluating simple linear expressions by substitution

Where the marks actually go
Combining unlike terms, so 3a + 2b becomes 5ab.
Substitution errors where the letter is replaced but the operation is misread — 3a with a = 4 evaluated as 34 rather than 12.
Solving equations by trial rather than by reversing the operations, which works for small numbers and fails immediately afterwards.
How to practise this properly
Read expressions aloud in full: “three times a, plus two” rather than “three a plus two”. The spoken form carries the operation.
Collect like terms by underlining each type differently before combining.
Solve equations by undoing operations in reverse order, and check by substituting the answer back.
Substitute values into expressions frequently. It keeps the letter connected to the idea of a number rather than becoming a symbol to manipulate blindly.

Secondary 1 algebra begins exactly here and moves quickly. A student secure with these five ideas starts secondary school with a genuine advantage.
A weakness at this stage rarely announces itself. It surfaces a year or two later wearing a different name, which is why parents so often report that the trouble “started” in a year where it merely became visible. Teaching Primary 1 through Primary 6 on one curriculum is what makes tracing it back to the real starting point practical rather than speculative.
