Line Symmetry: A Primary 4 Guide

What line symmetry actually asks of a Primary 4 student

Symmetry is intuitive to recognise and surprisingly hard to test rigorously. A line is a line of symmetry only if folding along it makes the two halves match exactly.

The completing task is the demanding one. Reflecting a figure across a line on a grid requires counting squares from the line for every point, and errors compound across the shape.

Children often assume any line through the middle is a line of symmetry, which is true for some shapes and not for others.

What the syllabus covers

Under the MOE primary mathematics syllabus, line symmetry at Primary 4 covers:

  • identifying symmetric figures
  • determining whether a straight line is a line of symmetry of a symmetric figure
  • completing a symmetric figure with respect to a given line of symmetry on square grid

Where the marks actually go

Assuming a diagonal through a rectangle is a line of symmetry. It is not, and this is the classic error.

Reflected figures drawn by eye rather than by counting squares, so the halves do not match.

Counting from the wrong reference — from the edge of the shape rather than from the line of symmetry.

How to practise this properly

Fold paper. Physically folding a shape along a candidate line settles the question immediately and builds the right mental test.

Count squares from the line for each vertex, mark the reflected points, then join them. Point by point, never freehand.

Test rectangles specifically, since the diagonal misconception is so common.

Check the finished figure by folding or by measuring a couple of points on each side.

What this leads to

Symmetry reasoning supports later geometry, and the grid-counting discipline is the same one used for coordinates and transformations at secondary level.

Is a diagonal a line of symmetry of a rectangle?

No. Folding along it does not produce matching halves. It is a line of symmetry of a square but not of a non-square rectangle.

Four — two through the midpoints of opposite sides and two along the diagonals.

How should a symmetric figure be completed?
