What time actually asks of a Primary 3 student
This is the first genuinely multi-step time topic. Given any two of starting time, finishing time and duration, a child must find the third — which requires choosing an operation rather than reading a clock.
The 24-hour clock arrives at the same time, and with it a second notation to keep straight. 1500 and 3 pm are the same moment written two ways, and questions move between them freely.

Where the marks actually go
Calculating duration in base ten. From 2.45 to 3.30 is forty-five minutes, not eighty-five, and treating the times as decimals is the dominant error in this topic.
Converting to 24-hour notation by adding twelve to morning times as well as afternoon ones.
Duration questions that cross noon or midnight, where a child subtracts and gets a negative or nonsensical result and writes it down anyway.
How to practise this properly
Work durations in two hops: up to the next whole hour, then on to the finish. It avoids base-sixty subtraction entirely and is how most adults do it.
Draw a simple time line for any question involving a crossing. Making the passage of time visible removes almost all of the confusion.
Practise reading both notations for the same time until switching between them is automatic.
What this leads to
Primary 5 rate questions and later speed work at secondary level all depend on confident duration arithmetic. The base-sixty habit formed here is what makes those manageable.
It is also why a difficulty in one year is so often a leftover from an earlier one. Because our curriculum spans Primary 1 through Primary 6, we can go back to the genuine cause rather than treating the symptom in front of us. A child struggling with Primary 5 fractions frequently has a Primary 3 equivalence problem, and no amount of Primary 5 practice will resolve it.

Why does my child calculate durations wrongly?
Almost always because they subtract as if time were decimal. Counting up to the next hour first avoids the problem altogether.
How does the 24-hour clock work?
Hours run from 0000 to 2359. Afternoon and evening times add twelve to the hour; morning times keep the same hour with a leading zero where needed.
