Bar Graphs and Scales: A Primary 3 Guide

Primary 3 covers reading and interpreting data from bar graphs, including graphs that use different scales on the axis.

What bar graphs actually asks of a Primary 3 student

Bar graphs replace pictures with length, which is more precise and less forgiving. The crucial change is the axis scale: gridlines may go up in twos, fives or tens, and the value of one square must be worked out before anything is read.

Bars that end between gridlines are where most of the difficulty sits, because the child must interpolate rather than count.

What the syllabus covers

Under the MOE primary mathematics syllabus, bar graphs at Primary 3 covers:

  • reading and interpreting data from bar graphs
  • using different scales on axis

Where the marks actually go

Assuming each gridline is one unit. If the scale goes up in fives, every answer is wrong by a factor of five and nothing on the page looks obviously amiss.

Misreading bars that stop between gridlines, usually by rounding to the nearer line rather than reading the halfway value.

Answering a different question from the one asked — giving a total where a difference was wanted, which remains the commonest data error at every primary level.

How to practise this properly

Work out what one square is worth and write it on the graph before answering anything. Making it a written step stops it being forgotten.

Practise with graphs whose scales differ within the same worksheet, so the scale must be checked each time rather than assumed.

Ask an interpretation question after each numerical one — which is largest, what the graph shows overall. Interpretation is named in the syllabus, not just reading.

What this leads to

Primary 4 adds tables, line graphs and pie charts, and Primary 6 brings the average of a set of data. The habit of checking the scale first serves all of them, and goes on serving through secondary statistics.

Because each year assumes the last, we teach the primary levels as one continuous sequence. Our MOE-aligned curriculum covers Primary 1 through Primary 6, so repair happens at the source rather than at the surface. In practice that often means spending a lesson on something from two years ago in order to fix what is failing today.

What lessons at Odyssey are actually like

A student describes the experience in her own words. She is in secondary school, and the teaching she describes is what we do at primary level too. More are on Odyssey Math TV.

Getting help with this topic

We teach Primary 3 maths in small classes at Hexacube, 160 Changi Road #01-02, about three minutes from Eunos MRT. You can see our class schedules and fees, read about our math tutors, or look through the primary school math tuition programme as a whole. If your child is in a nearby school, our primary school directory may be useful too.

A free trial class costs you an hour and tells you where the real gap is. For most families that is more useful than another assessment book, because the problem is rarely a shortage of practice and usually a specific misunderstanding nobody has found yet. Book one here or WhatsApp +65 8512 6882.

What we describe here comes from teaching this syllabus in our own classes since 2012. It is not a forecast for any individual child: progress is produced jointly, by a student willing to do the work with support at home. We do not promise grades. Topics follow the MOE primary mathematics syllabus — check the current syllabus on the MOE website for the definitive version, and see our curriculum page for how we teach it.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my child misread bar graphs?

Usually because the axis scale was not checked. Writing down the value of one square before answering removes almost all of these errors.

How should bars between gridlines be read?

By working out what half or a quarter of the gap is worth, based on the scale, rather than rounding to the nearest line.

Do Primary 3 students draw bar graphs?

The syllabus at this level specifies reading and interpreting. Drawing features more heavily in later work and in classroom activities.

What comes after bar graphs?

Tables, line graphs and pie charts at Primary 4, and average of a set of data at Primary 6.
