Compound Units and Conversion: A Primary 3 Measurement Guide

Primary 3 measurement adds kilometres and millilitres, measuring in compound units, and converting between kilometres and metres, metres and centimetres, and kilograms and grams.

What length, mass and volume actually asks of a Primary 3 student

Conversion is the whole topic, and it is the first place where a child must know a fact — that a kilometre is a thousand metres — before any reasoning can begin.

Compound units are new too. Writing a length as 2 m 35 cm rather than as a single number means holding two units at once, and converting between that and 235 cm is exactly what questions ask for.

What the syllabus covers

Under the MOE primary mathematics syllabus, length, mass and volume at Primary 3 covers:

  • measuring length in kilometres (km) and volume of liquid in millilitres (ml)
  • measuring length, mass and volume of liquid in compound units
  • converting a measurement in compound units to the smaller unit, and vice versa, for kilometres and metres, metres and centimetres, and kilograms and grams

Where the marks actually go

Converting in the wrong direction — dividing when multiplying was needed. The answer is out by a factor of a thousand and often goes unnoticed.

Mixing up which pairs of units share which factor. Metres to centimetres is a hundred; kilometres to metres and kilograms to grams are a thousand.

Leaving an answer in compound units when a single unit was asked for, or the reverse.

How to practise this properly

Ask whether the answer should be a bigger number or a smaller one before converting. Going to a smaller unit always gives a bigger number, and that single check prevents most errors.

Learn the three conversion factors deliberately rather than hoping they stick. There are only three at this level, and everything else follows from them.

Practise both directions in the same session, since fluency one way does not imply the other.

What this leads to

Primary 4 and 5 use these conversions constantly inside area, volume and rate questions, where the conversion is a step rather than the question. A shaky conversion then breaks a problem that was otherwise understood.

This is why we teach the primary years as one arc rather than six separate ones. Our MOE-aligned curriculum runs from Primary 1 to Primary 6, so when something goes wrong we can trace it to the year it actually formed and repair it there, instead of drilling the level where it happens to be showing up. That distinction usually decides whether extra work produces improvement or simply produces more work.

What lessons at Odyssey are actually like

Our students describe the teaching in their own words. This one is a secondary student — the approach is the same one your child would meet in a primary class, taught at the right level. More are on Odyssey Math TV.

Getting help with this topic

We teach Primary 3 maths in small classes at Hexacube, 160 Changi Road #01-02, about three minutes from Eunos MRT. You can see our class schedules and fees, read about our math tutors, or look through the primary school math tuition programme as a whole. If your child is in a nearby school, our primary school directory may be useful too.

The first lesson is a free trial, and it is a diagnosis rather than a sales pitch: we would rather tell you what is actually wrong than sign you up. If the answer is that your child does not need tuition yet, we will say so. Book a free trial class or WhatsApp +65 8512 6882.

What we describe here comes from teaching this syllabus in our own classes since 2012. It is not a forecast for any individual child: progress is produced jointly, by a student willing to do the work with support at home. We do not promise grades. Topics follow the MOE primary mathematics syllabus — check the current syllabus on the MOE website for the definitive version, and see our curriculum page for how we teach it.

Frequently asked questions

Which conversions does Primary 3 cover?

Kilometres and metres, metres and centimetres, and kilograms and grams, in both directions.

What are compound units?

A measurement written with two units, such as 2 m 35 cm or 1 kg 200 g. Questions ask for conversion to a single unit and back.

How do I stop my child converting the wrong way?

Ask first whether the answer should be bigger or smaller. Smaller units always produce bigger numbers, and that check catches the error before it happens.

Does Primary 3 convert between millilitres and litres?

Millilitres are introduced at Primary 3. The conversions specified in the syllabus at this level are kilometres and metres, metres and centimetres, and kilograms and grams.
